Minor Programs in the Department of BGES

The Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences offers minor programs in Biology, in Geology, and in Environmental Science.

Requirements for the Minor Program in Biology

A minor program of study in biology consists of 16 credit hours. BIO 200/201 and 202/203 are required courses. The remaining 8 credits must be 200-, 300-, or 400-level biology courses:

  • BIO courses numbered 266-269.
  • BIO courses numbered 300-311.
  • BIO courses numbered 410-496.

One of the following courses, or linked pair of courses where a labroatory is included, may be substituted for a BIO prefixed course: EVS 300/301; EVS 302/303; EVS 450; EVS 454/455; EVS 470/471; EVS 472/473.

A grade of C or better is required for all courses applied to the minor in Biology.

Go to Course Descriptions to find more information about individual biology courses.

Contact the undergraduate advisor for Biology, Dr. Barbara Modney, at (216) 687-2440 or bges@csuohio.edu for more information or if you want to use transferred courses to satisfy minor requirements.

Requirements for the Minor Program in Environmental Science

A minor program of study in environmental science consists of 19 or 20 credit hours. BIO 202/203 (Introductory Biology II), EVS 206 (Introduction to Environmental Science), EVS 300/301 (Physical Features of Ecosystems) and EVS 302/303 (Biological Features of Ecosystems) are required courses. The remaining 3 or 4 credits must be one of the following three courses [or any course with strong environmental content, as approved by the Environmental Science advisor]: CHM 255 (Principles of Environmental Chemistry), CVE 471 (Environmental Law, Regulation, and Compliance), or GEO 323 (Geospatial Concepts and Tools).

Go to Course Descriptions to find more information about individual environmental science courses.

Contact the undergraduate advisor for Environmental Science, Dr. Julie Wolin, at (216) 687-3505 or j.wolin@csuohio.edu for more information or if you want to use transferred courses to satisfy minor requirements.

Requirements for the Minor Program in Geology

The minor in Geological Sciences is intended as a flexible opportunity for students to incorporate significant course work dealing with the earth sciences into their university careers. All geology minor programs of study must be approved by the undergraduate advisor for Geology, Dr. Abdolali Babaei, at (216) 687-3506 or a.babaei@csuohio.edu, and they must meet the following criteria:

  • The geology minor consists of GEO 100/101 (Introductory Geology and Laboratory) and at least 13 credit-hours above the 100-level. At least 9 credit hours must be above the 200-level.

  • The courses making up the geology minor must comprise a consistent set of courses that make sense to be taken together as a sequence. The sequence of courses will depend on the particular needs of the individual student, but the sequence as a whole must be approved in advance by the undergraduate advisor for Geology.

  • A grade of "C" is the minimum passing grade for all courses applied to the minor.

  • Go to Course Descriptions to find more information about individual geology courses.
