Research Interests

Most of my research experience has been related to the fields of forest genetics and tree improvement from my first position with the Missouri Department of Conservation to an 11 year period with the paper and packaging company, MeadWestvaco.  I have also participated in long-term ecosystem studies related to individual tree and forest ecosystem responses to disturbance.

At Cleveland Metroparks, my responsibilities are to stimulate collaborative research and monitoring projects that provide practical and reliable scientific information for the conservation and management of natural resources in the Park District and northeastern Ohio.  Implicit in this goal is the study of impacts affecting these resources, including those related to park visitation and the changed urban environment.  The park system spans nearly 8,500 hectares across 16 reservations.  Approximately 80% of the land is kept in a "natural" state, but heavy use, urban development, exotic species, wildlife, and climate influence the ecological integrity of the system.  While many of my duties are now administrative, I am intimately involved in developing and implementing both long-term ecosystem monitoring projects and short-term research projects.  We cooperate with local, regional, state, and federal partners to gather information useful for the management of the park system and surrounding region.  Current projects include amphibian, owl, emerald ash borer, and bird monitoring; deer health and deer impact studies; human dimensions related to park wildlife and natural resources; headwater stream and wetland evaluations; Blanding’s turtle ecology and reintroduction studies; and American chestnut restoration.
