Cuyahoga River

The entire 22 miles of the Cuyahoga River within the CVNRA were traversed in canoes and kayaks to assess availability of potential habitats and to determine locations for survey sites. A total of 13 survey sites along the River were established. Most of these sites were located near a bridge or another access point.

Live individuals of three species of mussels were found in the Cuyahoga River: Potamilis alatus, Quadrula quadrula, and Pyganodon grandis Evidence of fresh shells suggests that other species, most notably Leptodea fragilis, may also occur in the river, but more thorough investigation is required to learn whether populations are recovering, or individuals are just remnants of previously established populations.
