Beyond the basic requirements, second year medical students view a variety of upper-level biology courses as essential for success in medical school, according to "Perceptions of second year medical students: the importance of undergraduate coursework" (K.Cheesman, K.T.Mechlin, P.Abels, J. Barnett, M. Easton). In order, courses seen as essential were

  • Histology
  • Physiology
  • Immunology
  • Endocrinology
  • Biochemistry
  • Anatomy
  • General Biology
  • Microbiology
  • Embryology
  • Genetics

Students at Ohio University and Ohio State were among those included in the survey. Students who took these courses and those who wished they had agreed on their importance. As the summary states, "medicine is biology-driven". Copies of the poster are available from the BGES undergraduate advisor.
