Dean's Letter to Alumni

Bette Bonder, Dean
Dr. Bette Bonder, Dean

Welcome to the Cleveland State University College of Science (COS). Although the College has only been in existence since July 1, 2004, its Departments and Programs have a long and distinguished history. Our Department of Physics was part of the original Fenn College of Engineering, the base upon which Cleveland State University was founded in 1964.

Thus, we have a large group of accomplished alumni living and working in Northeast Ohio, and around the country. We are pleased that so many of you have remained connected with us.

As you look peruse the College website, you'll undoubtedly find that the Departments have grown and changed. We've added new majors and certificates (physician assisting, forensic chemistry, adult development and aging for example) to meet the needs of the ever-evolving world of work. We've increased our research efforts to address vital societal issues. We've grown in size, providing new and improved educational opportunities for students in our region and our growing group of national and international students.

But the characteristics you most valued about your experience here have remained the same. We have faculty who are committed to providing the best possible education for our students, who care deeply about helping students grow both intellectually and personally. We remain closely tied to the community, through service activities, educational collaborations, and research partnerships. In fact, the University's chosen signature is "Engaged Learning," a form of hands-on, community-based education that has characterized COS instruction since the inception of the University.

Many of you have assisted us in our efforts to retain this valuable aspect of the educational experience as we strive to meet emerging needs. You've given lectures to classes, had students as interns in your organizations, and contributed financial resources that allow us to enrich our students; experiences. Your support is needed now more than ever. We need your suggestions and input about the directions we're taking, we need your active engagement with our current students and faculty, and we need to hear about your accomplishments to help us motivate current and future students.

We also need your financial support. As State assistance to higher education has diminished, we have increasingly relied on contributions from the community to ensure that we can sustain and improve opportunities for those who follow you.

We hope you will be pleased by what you learn about the growth of the College and its programs, and we hope you will choose to continue to aid our efforts. We are grateful for your past contributions, and for your willingness to continue, and increase, your support in the future.

Please feel free to contact me with questions, suggestions, and concerns. And feel free to come back and visit-the website lists College activities for which we hope you will join us. We look forward to seeing you on campus.

Please give to the activity or unit of your choice, and many thanks for your continued interest and support.
