Emergency Management

K9 Unit

The CSU Police Department employs one Explosive Detecting Police K9. Cleveland State obtained CSUK9 Rex through a grant from Ohio Department of Homeland Security (ODHS) in October of 2014. This grant allowed for the purchase and training for explosive detecting K9’s for a number of Ohio Public Universities. K9 Rex was born in Holland in June of 2013. K9 Rex and his handler, Officer Stoltz, trained for twelve weeks in Columbus, Ohio. Rex is a Czechoslovakian Shepherd certified in the detection of nine different types of explosives. He continues to add additional explosive odors to his repertoire as they become available. K9 Rex is utilized for protective sweeps of events that occur on campus, checks of unattended packages and bags and is subject to be called out to assist other Police Agencies in the state of Ohio for bomb threats and large events.

K9 Rex lives with Officer Stoltz, and they both truly enjoy working together. Don’t be surprised or alarmed if you see K9 Rex and Officer Stoltz on campus. They are just working to keep you safe at Cleveland State University.
