Statement of CSU-AAUP Regarding 2003 Negotiations
The CSU-AAUP team members enter the interest-based
bargaining process with open minds and in a spirit of cooperation. Our
objective in the process is to represent our constituents in such
a manner that we insure that they receive all the rights and benefits
they are entitled to and to help improve the quality of their lives
as faculty members at Cleveland State University.
We understand that the CSU Administration team members
will be seeking to solve a number of problems that relate to the
management of the institution. However, we also believe that
the ultimate goal of both parties is to insure that we continue
to serve our students effectively.
We are hopeful that the interest-based bargaining
process will allow all of us to achieve our goals by jointly finding
solutions to problems and doing so in an efficient manner.
Statement of CSU Administration
We are about to embark on negotiation of the fourth contract between
the Cleveland State University administration and the CSU Chapter
of the American Association of University Professors (CSU-AAUP). |

Although we have successfully
negotiated three previous contracts by traditional adversarial bargaining,
the process was often lengthy and required eleventh-hour mediation
by outside parties. The
collective bargaining environment at CSU has now matured to the point
where a new approach to contract negotiation is desirable.
We are very pleased that CSU-AAUP has agreed to join us in a conscientious
effort at principled negotiation through the technique of Interest
Based Bargaining (IBB). The administration will bring several
issues to the table. No doubt CSU-AAUP will also identify a
number of issues of concern.
Some of the issues are likely to be the same. Although the
interests underlying the issues for each party will differ, we are
confident that a mutual exploration and understanding of those interests
will result in resolutions that are feasible, beneficial, and acceptable
to both the administration and CSU-AAUP.
