STARS Program

The Student Achievement in Research and Scholarship (STARS) program, sponsored by the Ohio Board of Regents is a statewide cooperative venture in Ohio to increase the pool of underrepresented students entering Ohio's graduate schools. The program is designed to identify the best undergraduate students and groom them for graduate school and ultimately for academic careers. The program targets African-American, Hispanic and Native American students who are underrepresented in their fields of study.

Goals

  • Introduce students to research-oriented experiences to facilitate their awareness of linkage between research and graduate school.
  • Provide close faculty-student working relationships, which increase understanding of the attributes necessary for success in graduate school.

Eligibility

To participate in this program, a student must meet the following criteria:

  • An undergraduate sophomore or junior
  • A citizen of the United States
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better
  • Considering future graduate study
  • Recommendations from Faculty and staff

  • GRE preparation
  • Faculty-assisted research projects
  • Academic/Professional conferences
  • Conference presentation skills
  • Research presentation forums

Financial Support

Research is required of every STARS participant. Student may work independently on a research project or assist a faculty mentor with current research. Research Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis.
