Beginning July 1, 2009 Cleveland State University no longer provides dial-up modem service for Internet connectivity.
The dial-up modem pool usage has been steadily declining and has reached a level of so few users that it is no longer cost effective for the institution to maintain the required equipment.
Limited bandwidth and the associated long wait times of dial-up connections discouraged users from downloading critical security patches and updates which placed the CSU network and computing infrastructure at risk.
And finally, the university’s equipment, reached the end of its useful life, and was no longer supported by the manufacturer.
All of these reasons have contributed to the decision to eliminate the university’s
dial-up modem pool service as of July 1, 2009.
