Earn a full semester of Spanish credit in four weeks and experience the excitement and beauty of Mexico!!!
Students
in beginning and intermediate language levels will study for four weeks while experiencing Mexican culture first hand at the Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies ("the Centro") on the campus of Universidad Internacional in the city of Cuernavaca. The courses available depend on the schedule for the month and the student's Spanish level. Students normally earn 8 to 12 credits.
Cuernavaca is located 50 miles southwest of Mexico City and is home to about half a million people. Its ideal climate and scenic setting have attracted visitors since the time of the Aztecs. Because of its mountain temperatures (80° daytime and 65° at night), it is known as the "City of Eternal Spring." Today, Cuernavaca is an exciting city with bustling industry. It is also a tourism center which includes many restaurants and dynamic night life, and over 20 Spanish language schools. This blend of old and new makes Cuernavaca the ideal place to study Spanish and learn about Mexican culture
Hundreds of CSU students have enjoyed studying at the Centro. Small language classes, history at your door step and caring host families will make this a trip to remember.
The Centro is located in a residential area of Cuernavaca and offers cafeteria and rest areas, a library, an exercise area, e-mail, and fax access. An on-site clinic provides medical services Monday through Friday.
Participants live with Mexican host families carefully chosen by the Centro. Students practice their Spanish skills and have the opportunity to observe and participate in the daily life and culture of Mexico. Double rooms with shared bath, three meals daily, and transportation to and from school (if too far to walk) are included.
Centro activities include conversation socials, films, afternoon excursions, dance or cooking classes and an optional weekend trip to Acapulco. Some activities will be incorporated into the CSU Field Studies course and others are available for students to sign up.
There
are no course or Spanish language prerequisites to participate in the CSU in Mexico Program. You will be placed at the appropriate level.
All students will also enroll in the CSU Spanish Field Studies course (2-4 credits) at the appropriate level (240, 340, 440, 540). Advising for course level and credit will be done at the time for summer registration.
At the Centro, all students will take an intensive Spanish class at the appropriate level (4 credits). Students will be placed in classes with no more than five students. Additional courses at the Centro of 1 to 3 credit hours are offered, in subjects such as Idiomatic Expression, Mexican Art and History.
Professor Tina Marie Plesca, professor of Spanish and Italian, will be leading this year’s trip. Instructors at the Centro are well-qualified, Spanish-speaking professionals dedicated to building students’ confidence with Spanish language and cultural knowledge.
