CSU in Jordan

Cancelled!
Intensive Arabic Language and Culture
June 9th - July 14th, 2012

Program Description

The CSU in Jordan program provides up to 12 credits in Arabic language and culture in the historic land of Jordan!

Students will take classes at Al-Ahliyya Amman University, in Amman, the capital of Jordan, where they will learn Modern Standard and Colloquial Arabic. Students will also participate in direct interaction with the Jordanian people and excursions to the naturally beautiful and historically rich areas of Jordan.

The Arabic study abroad will be held in the city of Amman, the capital of Jordan. Amman (population around 3 million) is a millennia-old Middle Eastern metropolis built on a series of hills and valleys. Steeped in history, Amman boasts many historical monuments, such as the Roman Amphitheatre, Herculean Temple, and the Umayyad Mosque. As the capital of Jordan, the city is a hub for culture, education, business, and tourism. Amman is one of the most diverse cities in the Middle East and enjoys a thriving arts scene featuring films and music festivals, as well as many other opportunities for students to expand their horizons. Students will also visit the Dead Sea and the historic site of Petra.

Female students may choose between on-campus dorms or apartment accommodations, while male students will stay in apartments for the duration of the program. The dorms are located on the campus of al-Ahliyya Amman University and are equipped with Wi-Fi, national and international telephone service, and access to public transportation. Students will have refrigerators in their rooms and each floor has a kitchenette. The double-occupancy apartments are fully furnished and include a bed, desk, refrigerator, air conditioning, kitchen, and other amenities.

Academic Program

In Jordan, all students will take:

  • 2 to 4 credit Field Studies course, which is an experiential course on Jordanian culture. The 4 credit option is offered to students wishing to do field research in Jordan. Taught by Dr. Tayyara.
  • Modern Standard Arabic at the Beginner or Intermediate level (4 credits); taught by Al-Ahliyya Amman faculty.
  • Colloquial Arabic at Beginner level (2 credits). Focus on the Jordanian-Palestinian dialect; taught by Al-Ahliyya Amman faculty.
Students are required to enroll in a 2 credit pre-trip course, Introduction to Jordan, in the 1st Summer Session. The Director grants exceptions to this requirement only in extreme circumstances.

Eligibility

Minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.0; minimum graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0. At the time of application, the applicant must have completed at least two semesters at CSU if a first year student, and at least one semester if a transfer or graduate student. The applicant must have not have an unpaid balance on their Treasury Services account and no infractions of the Student Code of Conduct which would prevent successful participation on the study tour. All applicants must schedule a pre-admission interview with the program director.

Cost

The program cost is $4950.

The cost includes roundtrip airfare, lodging, health insurance, group transportation and excursions, and 6 cr. of Al-Ahliyya Amman courses. The cost does not include tuition for the required 4 crs. of CSU courses and may change due to increases in airfare and/or the exchange rate. To view the current tuition rates, go to www.csuohio.edu/tuition.

Students should budget about $600 for meals and other traveling incidentals. If a student opts for an apartment, the student will need to pay a refundable $500 housing deposit. An optional weekend excursion to Aqaba is available for $150. Students are also responsible for passport or visa fees, health insurance, and personal souvenir purchases and sightseeing.

Billing

The $4950 cost is broken down into 3 payments:
  • $200 payment due with application (see application for instructions on how to make this payment).
  • $2850 payment. This charge is the payment to ISA, the company arranging onsite logistics for us. This charge will be posted to your Treasury Services account after your acceptance. Payment deadline: April 2nd, 2012.
  • $1900 for remainder of cost. This charge will be posted to your Treasury Services account after your acceptance. Payment deadline: May 1st, 2012.
You make payments toward these charges just like you would for tuition, electronically through Campusnet or by cash/check through the Cashier’s desk in Main Classroom or by mail. If your program fees are not paid by the due dates indicated above, you may be removed from the program.

All program fees are refundable up until April 2, 2012. $3350 is refundable from April 2-May 1, 2012. After May 1, 2012, none of the $4950 is refundable.

Financial Aid

Students may use summer financial aid to pay for the program fee and the required CSU tuition. Summer financial aid is usually whatever aid a student did not use for fall and spring. It is usually loans, not grants. Students can apply for independent loans through private lenders or by talking with a Campus 411 representative.

Please note: The $200 deposit due at the time of application cannot be deferred and must be paid by the application deadline.

In order to apply summer financial aid toward these fees, the student must provide the Study Abroad office with a copy of their financial aid award letter reflecting that the student has enough summer aid to cover both their tuition costs for all courses taken in the summer term and the $2850 and $1900 program fee. The student must also provide the Study Abroad office with their summer course schedule. All of these documents must be submitted to the study abroad office by the April 2nd payment deadline. If you have any questions about using financial aid toward the study abroad cost, please contact the Study Abroad office.

Scholarships

Two scholarships are available to students on short term programs. Eligible students can apply for the CISP Education Abroad Scholarship and the ODAMA Education Abroad Scholarship (click on the links to go to the eligibility requirements for each scholarship as well as the application form).

Do I need a Visa?

If you are not a United States citizen (even if you are a Permanent Resident), you may need a visa to enter Jordan. Go to the Jordan Embassy’s website here to find out if you need a short term tourist visa to enter the Jordan. If you have any questions regarding visas, contact the Education Abroad Office.

Application

The program application and deposit slip is due no later than March 5, 2012 to confirm your participation. To make the program deposit of $200, take the deposit information from the application and your payment to the Cashier’s Desk in the First Floor of the Main Classroom. You will receive a receipt that you must turn in with your application.
