The Fulbright Scholarship Program

The Fulbright Program:
The Fulbright Scholarship Program was created in 1946 by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright. The purpose of this program is to promote mutual understanding between the people of the U.S and other countries through the exchange of knowledge and skills, and to provide U.S.students with an opportunity for professional development and international experience. Students from almost every discipline imaginable have traveled to 124 different countries on Fulbrights grants and have found the experience invaluable with regards to both the personal and professional benefits it offers.

Fulbright Advising at Cleveland State:
The Center for International Services and Programs at Cleveland State offers Fulbright advising and can help interested students with proposal ideas and proposal writing skills. Interested students are encouraged to contact Education Abroad Coordinator, for applications and guidance.

Application Process at CSU:
Application forms are now online but information booklets are available at the Center for International Services and Programs. Students wishing to apply for a Fulbright grant should make an appointment to meet with Education Abroad Coordinator to discuss proposal ideas. The CISP staff will work with applicants to revise and polish proposals. Preliminary proposals should be submitted to CISP by August 1st, and the finished proposal for an academic year Fulbright should be submitted to CISP no later than October 2nd. After submission to CISP, proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by Cleveland State's Fulbright Review Committee and the applicant will be interviewed. Then the application will be sent on to the first round of evaluation by the U.S. Institute of International Education. If accepted, students will be notified by spring. Interested students are encouraged to contact CISP as soon as possible to begin work on proposals, as the revision process can take up to several months.

CSU students have been very successful with Fulbright applications in the past. Most recently, an '08 graduate of the CSU Honors' Program (Anthropogy/Sociology), Jacklyn Fry, received a Fulbright grant to teach English in South Korea.

Boren Graduate Fellowships

The National Security Education Program David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships provide students with the opportunity to specialize in an international area of study and language. The priority of this scholarship is to promote the study of languages and cultures less commonly understood. This fellowship carries with it a service obligation. US citizens that are enrolled in a graduate program at the time of application are eligible.

Marshall Scholarship

Marshall Scholarships finance U.S. citizens for two (sometimes 3) years of university study at any British university. At least forty scholars are selected each year from a variety of disciplines. The scholarship includes money for tuition, travel, books, and living expenses. Students should apply within two years of earning their undergraduate degree. Student must have a 3.7 GPA or higher to be considered.

The George J. Mitchell Scholarships

Students that are interested in studying abroad in Ireland and Northern Ireland universities can apply for the George J. Mitchell's scholarships. To increase the opportunity of getting awarded, students are encouraged to apply to more than one of the universities participating in the Mitchell Scholarships. This scholarship is being administered by the US-Ireland Alliance. Students will receive free tuition and room, and also a stipend of $11,000.

English Teaching Assistantships in Austria:

Since 1963, this program has provided college and university graduates with opportunities to work at secondary schools throughout Austria as teaching assistants. U.S. teaching assistants not only enhance the instruction of English as native speakers; they also are important resource persons for first hand information about the "American way of life" and representatives of the United States. This program is financed by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture, and applications are administered by the Austrian-American Educational Commission (Fulbright Commission). Although the participants in this program make a substantial contribution to the fulfillment of the Fulbright mandate of promoting mutual understanding between the peoples of Austria and the United States, this teaching assistantship program is not part of the official Fulbright Grant Programs.

Germany - Alexander von Humboldt German Chancellor Scholarships

A one year study grant, including German language training, for prospective leaders from the U.S.A. in the academic, economic and political fields to conduct projects in Germany. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, under age 35, who have completed a bachelor's degree prior to beginning the scholarship. Applicants design projects related to their professional development and goals. Projects may include study, internships, a junior staff position, or independent research. Scholars are also given the opportunity to take part in the social, cultural, economic and political situation in Germany. The scholarships include German language training. A monthly scholarship stipend covers housing and living expenses as well as transportation costs to and from Germany.

Central Europe Summer Research Insititute

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation and managed by the Institute of International Education, CESRI is a fellowship opportunity for U.S. graduate students in science and engineering who are seeking a quality hands-on international research experience in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia.

Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program

Biomedical engineers can use the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program to go overseas to help further their careers, and the field of BME. Potential overseas activities could include:

• Conducting research at an academic institution
• Interning at a policy institute
• Establishing ties between home and host institutions
• Pursuing post-doctoral research

American-Scandinavian Foundation

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships (up to $23,000) and grants (normally $5,000) to individuals to pursue research or study in one or more Scandinavian country for up to one year. The number of awards varies each year according to total funds available. Over $300,000 is available for the 2011-12 competition. Awards are made in all fields.

Taiwan Scholarship

This scholarship is for students who wish to enroll in a degree program in Taiwan. Recipients will receive a monthly stipend and tuition reimbursement. Students must apply separately for admission to the Taiwanese university of their choice. Application deadline March 31.
