Placement Test

English

Students will be placed into English courses based on their ACT or SAT scores as listed below:
ACT 15 and lower
SAT 370 and lower

ACT 16-19
SAT 380-460

ACT 20-25
SAT 470-580

ACT 26 and higher
SAT 590 and higher
English 085 English 090 English 101 English 102

Math

Students will be placed into Math courses based on their ACT and SAT scores as listed below. Students with ACT Math scores of 17-26 or SAT Math scores of 400-600 are asked to take the COMPASS Math test to better identify their placement.
ACT 16 or lower
SAT 390 or lower

ACT 17-26
SAT 400-590

ACT 27 or above
SAT 600 or above
Recommend Math 087 or 088 Take Math Placement Test Take Advance Math Placement Test (optional)*
* The lowest math placementt without taking the Advanced Math Placement test will be MTH 167 (Pre-Calculus 1).

Foreign Language

  • Placement Testing Office also administers computerized Spanish and French placement tests.
  • The Spanish and French departments can access the test results in order to place students appropriately.

Math

  • A calculator is built into the computer, NO other calculators are allowed.
    Scratch paper is provided for the math test.
  • Students scoring below 16 on the ACT Math or 390 on the SAT Math begin in MTH 087 or MTH 088.
  • The Compass test can help place students with ACT Math scores 17 - 26 or SAT Math scores 400 - 600 into a math class
  • Students scoring 27/600 or more on the ACT/SAT Math will at least be placed into MTH 167 or below

Other Tests

  • Computerized COMPASS tests are also available for Education, Chemistry, and English as a Second Language (ESL).

General Information

  • All Placement Testing is conducted in Rhodes Tower West, Room 289.
  • Sample tests are available online at Sample Placement Test.
  • Click for Placement Testing Dates and Times.
  • You do not need to register for the placement tests. Simply show up during the posted placement testing hours.
  • You will need to sign in your name and CSU ID Number.
  • A Photo ID is required at sign in.
  • CSU accepts AP and PSEOP credits with a CSU advisor's approval.
  • Cell phones are not permitted in the Placement Testing area.
  • Calculators are not permitted (you may use the calculator built into the computer).
