CLEP-SUBJECT EXAMINATIONS

CREDIT BY EXAMINATION AT CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY

THROUGH THE COLLEGE LEVEL EXAMINATION PROGRAM-SUBJECT EXAMINATION (CLEP-SE)

1. What are CLEP-SE?

CLEP-SE are a group of end-of-course examinations designed to test a students’ knowledge of specific course material.  Each examination, with the exception of some mathematics examinations, is composed of an objective test and an essay test.  Please refer to the reverse side of this sheet for a list of the objective and essay examinations and the credits available.  The fee is $70.00 for each examination, PLUS A $30.00 NON-REFUNDABLE processing fee.  Testing time for each objective test is 90 minutes, and for the essay section an additional 90 minutes.  A book which gives a brief description of each examination and sample questions is available from the CLEP program or most major bookstores.

2. How Much Credit Does CSU Grant for CLEP-SE?

A maximum of 44 semester hour credits earned by way of CLEP-SE may be credited toward a bachelor’s degree.  A score of 52 (generally the 60th percentile) on the objective test, and on the essay test a “satisfactory” evaluation by the appropriate department is required.

3. Who is Eligible to Take the Subject Examinations?

Any freshman, sophomore, or junior year student who feels he/she can qualify for credit, and who does not already have credit for a subject, may take a subject examination.  The examinations may be taken prior to enrollment, but only matriculated CSU students will receive credit.  A currently enrolled CSU student should consult his/her college advisor before arranging to take a subject examination.  The CLEP examinations given by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) are the same examinations given at CSU.  Students who have taken the test through DANTES should submit an official copy of their transcript to the Admissions Office.

4. How Do I Take the Test?

A registration guide, which includes the application for the test, is enclosed.  It should be completed and sent to Testing Services, Rhodes Tower, Room 1237.  Your unofficial score report is generated immediately after the examination, an official report is mailed to the institution you designate on the day of testing in approximately 2 weeks.  If you have any questions about the registration process or about special arrangements for testing students with a disability, call Testing Services, (216)687-2272.

5. What Procedures are Followed for Granting Credits?

Be sure to indicate on the test registration form that you wish a copy of your scores be sent to CSU.  The Office of Admissions will notify you by mail of the credit granted.  Questions regarding the applicability of CLEP-SE credit toward degree requirements should be directed to your academic advisor or the Dean’s Office.
