CREDIT BY EXAMINATION AT CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY
THROUGH THE COLLEGE LEVEL EXAMINATION PROGRAM-GENERAL EXAMINATION
(CLEP-GE)
1. What is CLEP-GE?
CLEP-GE is a testing program with five sections which tests the achievement of students through independent study in the areas of English, Mathematics, Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Testing time for each objective test is 90 minutes and for the essay section an additional 90 minutes. The fee is $70.00 for each examination, plus a $30.00 NON-REFUNDABLE, NON-TRANSFERABLE service fee. A booklet which describes the examinations and gives sample questions “Guide to the CLEP Examinations” is available from the CLEP program, most major bookstores and some public libraries, including the CSU bookstore
2. How Much Credit Can I Receive at Cleveland State University Through CLEP-GE

The score range is 20-80. No partial credit is granted.
3. Who is eligible to Take the Test for Credit?
Any person who feels he/she can qualify for credit may take the examination in one or more of the areas. The examination may be taken prior to enrollment, but only matriculated CSU students will receive credit. Students who have taken the test through DANTES should submit an official copy of their transcript to the Admissions Office.
4. Are Presently Enrolled CSU Students Eligible for Credit Through CLEP-GE?
The intent of the CSU policy is to offer credit to students who have not yet enrolled or who have not completed the credits for the freshman year. CSU students should talk with a academic advisor before arranging to take the test. Credit is not available to senior year students or students who have already earned course credit in the areas covered by a CLEP-GE.
5. What Procedures are Followed for Granting Credit?
You should be sure to indicate on the test registration form that you wish for a copy of your scores sent to CSU. The Admissions Office will notify you by mail of the amount of credit granted. Questions regarding the use of CLEP-GE credit for degree requirements should be directed to your academic advisor.
6. How Do I Take the Test?
A registration guide, which includes the application for the test, is enclosed. It should be completed and sent to the address below. A schedule of testing dates and registration deadlines is included on this sheet. Your unofficial score report is generated immediately after the examination & Educational Testing Services will mail an official report to the university you designate on the test date in approximately 2 weeks. Registration forms and the $30.00 non-refundable, non-transferable service fee per examination in the form of a check or money order, made payable to CSU must be received by the registration deadline.
Examination times for the above test dates are 8:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m. & 1:30 p.m. Please include on your Registration-Admission Form, #12, your 1st & 2nd test date & include your time choice. Due to limited capacity, there is NO guarantee you will receive the date and/or time you request. Registration will be on a first come/first serve basis.
Registration guides are available in the office of Testing Services, Room 1237, Rhodes Tower. Registration forms should be complete and received by Testing Services before the close of registration date.
