Cleveland State University has appointed Jennifer McMillin as its new Director of Sustainability. In that role, she will manage the university’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and waste, enhance alternative energy use, and increase overall environmental quality on campus. She will also lead multiple education and training initiatives designed to enhance sustainability among CSU students, faculty and staff as well as the broader community.
“Jennifer has a tremendous background in sustainable outreach and training and will assist CSU in expanding our environmental quality efforts, while also helping us to serve as a local and national model for sustainable development,” notes Joseph Han, CSU’s Associate Vice President for Administration and Operations.
“I am very excited to join the team at CSU and look forward to working with the campus community to promote sustainability in all aspects of operations, education and community engagement,” McMillin adds. “The university has already made numerous strides in creating a sustainable campus and I am looking forward to building on these achievements and assisting in promoting sustainable development throughout the region.”
CSU was recently named a Green Power Partner by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of purchasing 30 percent of its energy from renewable sources. It is also undertaking an LED-lighting upgrade to improve energy efficiency across campus and provides free RTA bus passes to all students to increase public transit use.
Prior to joining CSU, McMillin chaired the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Working Group on Corporate Sustainability, leading a group of sustainability practitioners and community members in devising a corporate sustainability network for Northeast Ohio. Prior to that, she served for six years as a sustainability officer with the Australian National University. In that role she managed community outreach, education, training and communication and led the development of the university’s internationally-recognized student and staff sustainability outreach program.
