Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:

As I said at Convocation earlier this month, with our world-class faculty, talented staff, and students, we are making tremendous progress in advancing the mission of the University.

I want to share several updates on our efforts.

Yearlong 50th Anniversary Celebration Continues

Our celebration continues with two signature events.

TedXClevelandStateUniversity – Friday, October 24, 2014

13 speakers were chosen around the theme, "The Right to Dream." The Monte Ahuja College of Business and others across the University have organized this highly anticipated event.

Presidential Forums – Thursday, November 13, 2014

CSU leaders past and present will gather in Drinko Hall for two panels. A presidents' panel will feature myself and presidents Michael Schwartz and Claire Van Ummersen as we discuss challenges facing higher education in the 21st century, moderated by Russ Mitchell of WKYC-TV 3.

Current Board Chairman Robert Rawson along with former chairmen Michael Climaco, Tim Cosgrove, and Ron Weinberg will explore the evolving roles of trustees, moderated by Anchor Leon Bibb of WEWS-TV 5.

All are invited and encouraged to attend.

Task Force Addressing University Enrollment

In August, our senior leadership formed an enrollment task force, which is being led by Craig Boise, Dean of the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. The task force is analyzing demographic trends in the Midwest, along with changes in our state funding formula, to guide us in developing strategies that will ensure we continue to grow our ability to serve the higher education needs of Northeast Ohio and beyond.

Later this fall, the group will present its findings and recommendations to the Board of Trustees.

Inaugural Deckard Fellows Named

Please join me in recognizing the inaugural recipients of the Deckard Family Civic Fellows Scholarship. The Office of Civic Engagement awards this new scholarship to rising junior and senior students who demonstrate civic involvement but face significant financial obstacles. The selected fellows will receive an award of $5,000 and are assigned to work 10 hours per week on behalf of a community office or initiative.

Congratulations to our 2014 Deckard Fellows, pictured left to right: Katie Lamar, Kayla Kearney, Brian Boccieri, Kia Smith, and Breanna Davis.

CSU Unites to Share

We’ve officially begun our 2014 Uniting to Share campaign, supporting the United Way of Greater Cleveland, Earthshare of Ohio, and Community Shares. Many in the Cleveland area are being called to participate. Please help CSU answer the call to help those in need in our community. Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Ronald M. Berkman

President
