May 20 through June 18. Opening Reception on Friday, May 20, 5-7 p.m.

CSU Art Gallery, 2307 Chester Ave.
Presence grew out of a conversation between CSU Art Gallery director Robert Thurmer and artist Terry Durst on the state of art, the course of recent history, the economy, how these developments affect life in Northeast Ohio, and how they are reflected in the art being produced in this region at this time – "US," "HERE" and "NOW."
The exhibition examines our particular circumstance here in Cleveland and the region. Each artist Durst selected represents an area of investigation that is unique yet complementary to each other, ranging from intimately scaled, gem-like formal and sensory explorations by Dan Tranberg to room-sized installations of objects and projections by Lizbeth Wolfe. Jeesun Park brings a decidedly Asian sensibility to the mix with works fashioned from bamboo and manila rope; the conceptualist Blake Cook shows just one 'not-too-large-but-very-heavy' object, and Philip Buntin contributes what one might oxymoronically call traditional contemporary paintings based on scientific diagrams, using enamels on Plexiglas.
Phillip Buntin is a faculty member at Kent State University's Trumbull campus.
Blake Cook is an assistant professor of art at Cuyahoga Community College.
Dan Tranberg is an artist and art critic based in Cleveland.
Lizbeth Wolfe has exhibited her works throughout Cleveland and nationally.
An exhibition of works produced in a joint program with HeARTworks and the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Organized by Angela McCrone, HeARTworks coordinator.
