High School students from Design Lab Early College and MC2STEM High Schools to become college students for a day
As a part of Cleveland State University’s commitment to STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine) Education, the Department of Teacher Education, College of Science and Fenn College of Engineering are presenting a day of fun, exploration and discovery for Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) students who attend two STEM High Schools, Design Lab Early College and MC2STEM. CSU’s first STEMM Exhibition Day will be held April 20, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
The day will begin with a GeoCash Scavenger Hunt that will take students (via GPS) through the CSU campus. Their journey will take them from Playhouse Square and IdeaStream on E. 14th Street and Euclid Ave., to the university’s television and radio studios on E. 18th Street, to the Driving Simulator on E. 24th Street. Students will participate in Chemistry, Physics, Math and Education projects, and learn about CSU’s Wind Turbines and community tutoring outreach.
The CMSD students will have the opportunity to experience what it is like to be an actual CSU student and will receive pre-paid Viking ID Cards. They will also choose their lunch destinations as a part of a small group.
In the afternoon, students will learn about the college admissions process and CSU’s Learning Community Project (a program that offers students needed support and has achieved a 95% retention rate for freshmen).
CSU has recently announced $50,000 in start-up funding for its newly-formed STEMM Center, and has been an active participant in the region’s STEMM education efforts as part of its overall mission of applied research, education and service to the community.
The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) serves a multicultural student body that represents at least 30 separate languages and cultures.
