The Sundown Jazz Concert on October 5 will present the Dave Morgan Trio, with Chris Anderson on trombone, Dan Murphy on piano and Dave Morgan on bass. The performance will take place on Sunday, October 5 at 4 p.m. in Drinko Recital Hall, located in Cleveland State University’s Music & Communication Building at the corner of East 21st Street and Euclid Avenue.
As always, the concert is free and open to the public.
Dave Morgan is a bassist and composer/arranger who performs regularly with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Unit and with artists including trumpeter Jack Schantz and saxophonist Howie Smith. He composed and arranged an evening of music for saxophonist Joe Lovano that has been released on the CD "The Surprise of Being--Live at Birdland" by the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra featuring Joe Lovano.
He also performs and records with the Russ Schmidt trio, featuring drummer Jim Rupp. He has accompanied many leading artists who have performed at the Nighttown jazz club in Cleveland, including Benny Golson, James Moody, Jiggs Whigham, Larry Coryell, Cedar Walton and Mose Allison.
Morgan was recently awarded a "New Works: Creation and Presentation" grant from Chamber Music America to compose new music for the Jazz Unit. His clarinet concerto, “Reflections and Meditations,” was recently recorded by the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, and “Three Vignettes” for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra, as recorded by the Beethoven Academy Orchestra, was recently released by Centaur Records.
Chris Anderson, one of this region’s finest trombonists, has been playing trombone for over 24 years, primarily in northeast Ohio. During that time he has performed with some of the area’s best in classical, jazz, gospel, Latin and other musical idioms. In addition to writing many different styles of music, he has demonstrated his performance versatility through engagements with the Canton Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Heritage Orchestra and many others.
Dan Murphy is a jazz pianist from the Akron/Cleveland area who leads his own trio and quartet, and is constantly performing with many top local artists, including vocalists Helen Welch and Barbara Knight, saxophonists Bobby Selvaggio and Ernie Krivda, trumpeter Jack Schantz, and trombonists Paul Ferguson and Chas Baker. Murphy has also backed-up visiting artists such as Kevin Mahogany, Slide Hampton, Jiggs Whigham and Paquito D’Rivera. He is featured on Bobby Selvaggio's quartet CD entitled “Visions Transitions,” as well as on Selvaggio's soon-to-be-released recording, “Modern Times.”
Murphy is also featured on singer Helen Welch's CD entitled “One Dream.” He has performed with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and has toured extensively in the U.S. and Japan with the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. He has also written arrangements for and recorded with the GMO.
