Cleveland State University’s Dramatic Arts Program will present Oliver Goldsmith’s 18th century comic masterpiece, She Stoops to Conquer, opening Thursday, April 17 at Cleveland State’s Factory Theater. The production is directed by Michael Mauldin, Ph.D., director and associate professor of Dramatic Arts.
Performance times are 8 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays, April 17-19 and April 24-26. Performances will be at 2 p.m. on Sundays on April 20 and 27.
Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer was first performed in London in 1773 but has enduring appeal today. Practical jokes and deception, secret lovers and multiple misunderstandings all unfold during one night at a country house —a classic comedy of manners and errors that has something for everyone.
The Factory Theater will be transformed into an 18th century theater for the run of the show, complete with candelabras and audience members from the period, including aristocrats, prostitutes, swordsmen and others.
Tickets are $5 for students, seniors and Cleveland State faculty and staff, and $10 for general admission. The Factory Theater is located at 1833 East 24th Street, between Chester and Payne avenues. The box office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or may be reached at 216.687.2113. Tickets may also be purchased one-half hour before show time.
