Ohio Board of Regents approves
four new degree programs

The Ohio Board of Regents has approved four new degree programs at Cleveland State University that will begin this fall, it was announced by Cleveland State President Michael Schwartz. The four degree programs are:

  • Master of Science in Software Engineering
  • Bachelor of Arts in Film and Digital Media
  • Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Promotional Communication
  • Bachelor of Arts in Communication Management

“These four new degrees are the result of the strong foundations and expertise within the Fenn College of Engineering, the Nance College of Business and the School of Communication,” said President Schwartz. “They address the demand for highly qualified individuals in these areas and provide students with the credentials they need to compete effectively in the job market. We’re delighted to offer these exceptional programs and expanded opportunities to our students.”

The Master of Science in Software Engineering (MSSE) is the first in Ohio. It is a joint interdisciplinary program between the College of Engineering and its department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the College of Business’ department of Computer and Information Science (CIS). The program is the successor to the existing Graduate Certificate program in Software Engineering and is intended for both practicing professionals and full-time students in the areas of software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science or information management.

The program introduces students to current and best practices in the engineering of software development. A distinguishing feature is its emphasis on the architecture, coding, deployment, management, economics, security, and reliability aspects of software engineering. Students will take a project from start to completion, learning the requirements of specific deliverables and the development life cycle. Critical management issues such as risk assessment, project planning, and market analysis are also covered. The program will expose students to new technical developments in an advancing field and how to apply their knowledge in their workplace. Graduates will meet the demands of industry survey results and address the needs for information technology professionals in general, and for software engineers in particular, in Northeast Ohio.

Cleveland State’s Department of Communication, founded in 1973, was reorganized into the School of Communication in 2004. The School is nationally known, with faculty ranked eighth in the country in communication research productivity. The Communication School houses a state-of-the-art Digital Video Communication Center, the Communication Research Center, and the university laboratory newspaper, The Cleveland Stater. Prior to the Ohio Board of Regents’ action, the School conferred only the Bachelor of Arts in Communication, which focuses on the dynamics of human relationships, impact of news and technology, and applications of communication to careers. The School now confers four undergraduate degrees: a major in Communication and the three new majors.

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Management introduces students to the dynamics of human relationships, organizational communication, health communication, and conflict mediation. Nationally recognized faculty offer courses in persuasion, intercultural communication and interpersonal communication. Five sequences introduce students to core communication concepts and applications. Business executives rate interpersonal communication skills, such as listening, to be among the most important factors in career success. Coursework provides job-related training in interpersonal competency, teamwork, negotiation, and public speaking. Communication managers are expected to be in demand over the next 10 years. Demand for health services managers, which requires competence in interpersonal and health communication, is expected to increase by 34 percent by 2012.

The Bachelor of Arts in Film and Digital Media introduces students to the impact of mass media on society and provides job-related training in filmmaking and digital media production. A media studies sequence gives students exposure to nationally recognized faculty who specialize in the effects of technology and mass media on children and adults. The film sequence provides training in screenwriting and film production, plus exposure to filmmakers affiliated with the School’s Picture This film program. Students in the digital media sequence gain experience working in state-of-the-art TV/audio studios and DVD authoring suites in the School’s Digital Video Communication Center, a pioneer in the digital media field since 2000. Employment for film and digital media majors is good, with employment in the information super sector expected to increase by 18 percent by 2012.

The Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Promotional Communication offers a comprehensive, ethically grounded education in journalism, public relations, and advertising. Students learn about the impact of mass media in a contemporary democracy and are educated in the gathering, production, and strategic dissemination of news. Students who specialize in journalism gain skills needed to become a reporter, editor or technical writer. An education in advertising and public relations can open doors to jobs in PR firms and advertising agencies. Experts predict a 19 percent increase in advertising and public relations jobs in the next 10 years. Students gain valuable journalism, public relations and advertising experience through internships and work at the university laboratory newspaper. They also take courses from nationally recognized faculty who specialize in political socialization and campaigns, urban communication, and international communication.

“Students can now gain academic and career training in specialized areas of our field,” said Dr. Richard M. Perloff, Director of the School of Communication. “Our faculty is among the top in the country and we have outstanding facilities for students. We are excited about the new paths the majors offer our students.”
