LSC President James Sandman Keynotes Constitution Day Event

Cleveland State University’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (1801 Euclid Ave.) will host James Sandman, president of Legal Services Corporation, for a Constitution Day Lecture Wednesday, September 20 at 5 p.m. Sandman will discuss Reforming the Civil Legal System to Assure Justice for All.

Sandman has been President of the Legal Services Corporation, the largest funder of civil legal aid programs in the United States, since 2011. Previously, he practiced law with Arnold & Porter LLP as the firm’s managing partner. Sandman is a past president of the 100,000-member District of Columbia Bar and has served as general counsel of the District of Columbia Public Schools.

During the discussion, Sandman will examine the inconsistency between America’s professed value of equal justice for all and the reality of the civil justice system where thousands of people walk into courtrooms alone, without a lawyer, because they cannot afford an attorney and have no constitutional right to one in civil matters. He will offer suggestions for reforming the civil legal system to address this challenge and provide true justice for all.

The one-hour program is free and open to the public. Preregistration is not required.
