Dr. Jerzy Sawicki Named Interim Associate Vice President for Research

Dr. Jerzy Sawicki, Bently and Muszynska Endowed Chair and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has joined the Cleveland State University administrative team in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies as Interim Associate Vice President for Research.

In his new position, he will assist Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies Dr. George Walker in advancing the university’s scholarly productivity by working directly with deans, faculty, staff, and students. Among his major responsibilities will be overseeing activities of research centers and institutes, and the development and enhancement of collaborative and interdisciplinary research programs. At the onset he will be working to improve the quality of service that the university provides to researchers in support of their scholarship and technology transfer efforts. Dr. Sawicki will also assist in identifying new high priority research clusters of faculty that promote the university research activity and reputation.

Professor Sawicki brings a wealth of knowledge to the office and is an outstanding scholar with a rich history of leadership and research productivity at Cleveland State University

A search to fill the position on a more permanent basis will begin later this year.

Biographical Summary

Dr. Sawicki is Director of the Center for Rotating Machinery Dynamics & Control (RoMaDyC). He joined the university in 1993, was promoted to full professor in 2001, and since 2004 holds the Bently and Muszynska Endowed Chair position. He received his BS, MS degrees in mechanical engineering from Gdansk University of Technology in 1980, and BS, MS in applied mathematics from the University Of Gdansk, Poland in 1986. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1992.

Dr. Sawicki has published one book and co-edited two conference proceedings. He is an author of more than 60 peer-reviewed journal papers and more than 150 peer-reviewed conference articles. He has been a keynote or invited guest speaker for many engineering conferences around the world. He has been frequently invited by US industry for technical lectures and seminars (e.g., Westinghouse Nuclear Pump Division, Siemens-Westinghouse, GE Aircraft Engines, Allied Signal, Federal-Mogul Corp., and others). His research has been funded by federal and state agencies, state and out-of-state corporations, including GE CRD, GE Aircraft Engines, Allied Signal, Federal-Mogul Corp., Philips Medical Systems, Bendix, NASA, and the Ohio Board of Regents. He has been a U.S. representative to the ISO/TC 108/SC 2/WG 7 international committee.

Dr. Sawicki is a Fellow (2002) of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). In 2001, he received the Ohio Outstanding Engineering Educator Award from the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE). In 2004, he received the University Distinguished Faculty Award for Research at Cleveland State University and Dr. Jennie S. Wang Award for Faculty Excellence. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio. Dr. Sawicki is an ASME-ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) evaluator for Mechanical Engineering programs. His committee and leadership service to the university has been considerable, including Chair of UPRC, as Vice President and President of CSU Faculty Senate.
