Q: When and where will auditions be held?
A: Department of Music audition days are sometimes, though rarely, scheduled throughout the year. Typically, individual auditions are preferred in order to accomodate both your and the audition coordinator's schedules. For best consideration for the Music Talent Scholarship, you should audition no later than March 15th prior to your anticipated enrollment at Cleveland State. Auditions are held in the Music & Communication Building.
Q: May I sumbit a tape rather than audition in person?
A: All applicants are strongly encouraged to audition on campus. Audio and videotaped auditions from international students and in cases in which travel to Cleveland presents an extreme hardship are acceptable.
Q: How do I schedule an audition?
A: To determine a mutually-convenient audition date and time, and to confirm your choice of audition repertoire, contact Alexandra Vago .
Q: How do I prepare for the audition?
A: For the audition, you should prepare two pieces in contrasting styles that demonstrate your musical and technical proficiency on your primary instrument. Voice students are expected to perform at least one song or aria in a language other than English. Percussion applicants should contact Howard Meeker, Director of Instrumental Studies, to confirm audition repertoire.
Candidates who wish to pursue the bachelor of music degree with a concentration in music composition are required to demonstrate proficiency on their primary instrument as well. For general information about the track in music composition, contact Andrew Rindfleisch, Coordinator of Music Composition.
Q: Do I need to bring an accompanist?
A: No. An accompanist is provided for vocal auditions. Other musicians are expected to perform pieces composed or arranged for their solo instrument.
Q: Do I have to be a music major to receive a music talent scholarship?
A: The Department of Music offers talent-based music scholarships to qualified in-coming freshmen, transfer students, and current students regardless of major in return for participation in Department of Music ensembles. Talent scholarships may be applied as payment to cover tuition and fees with the exception of applied music fees. For best consideration, you should audition no later than March 15th prior to your anticipated enrollment at Cleveland State. Questions about the Music Talent Scholarhip should be directed to Howard Meeker .
Q: I am applying as a transfer candidate. May I audition for a music talent scholarship?
A: Yes...and see above!
Q: I will be an undergraduate. May I apply for a graduate assistantship?
A: No. Graduate assistantships are available to master of music candidates only. Eligible undergraduates, however, may apply to work in the Department of Music under the auspices of the Federal Work Study Program. They may also apply to William Lovell, Office Coordinator, for employment as stage and audio crew for the many concerts and events that take place in the Music & Communication Building during the semester.
Q: When will I find out if I have been awarded a music talent scholarship or graduate assistantship?
A: Awards for music talent scholarships and graduate asssistantships, stipends and tuition waivers are determined in March prior to enrollment at Cleveland State. Applicants are informed of the results by April 1st.
