This homepage is set up for use primarily by Cleveland State University students
and applicants; of course, guests are welcome, too! By clicking the highlighted
links in my homepage, you can peruse the information about my past work, my currently posted c.v., information
about current and upcoming courses I am or will be teaching, the summer study
in Mexico programs I have directed, and some of my outside interests.
I have been a member of the Cleveland State
Faculty since 1972. More than 15 years were almost entirely involved
with instructional media (audiovisual services) and most of the rest
of time I have held primarily administrative positions within the Modern
Languages. Currently, I am serving as Coordinator of the Spanish
Language Program and Director of the M.A. Program in Spanish. I normally
teach the Spanish Methods courses (K-8 and Secondary), the Research
Methods course for graduate students and the occasional literature or
civilization course.
Within the broad realm of Hispanic research, I consider myself a Twentieth
Century (and now Twenty-First Century) generalist in the field of literary
criticism. This is not unexpected, given my Ph.D. from Case Western
Reserve University in Twentieth Century Spanish Peninsular Novel, with
minor areas in art history, comparative literature and French literature.
I have made numerous presentations on various aspects of Spanish and
Spanish American literature, literature and film, and pedgagogy at scholarly
conferences, including national and international venues. I have gone
on to develop some of these further, so they have reached a broader
audience via publication in scholarly journals and books. I have published
several articles , and I have made substantial contributions to two
critical reference books, including their prologs. I have also co-edited
a book, Studies in Honor of Donald W. Bleznick. The
details of these materials can be seen in my c.v..
I also maintain an active presence in several of our professional organizations,
including OFLA (The Ohio Foreign Language Association), the AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese), and MALAS (The Midwest Association of Latin American Studies).
I have recently been busy setting up a web course within WebCT, the program
CSU has advocated for such purposes. Students interested in improving
their Spanish, who have at least the basics of Spanish pretty well under
control (SPN I & II, at least), and who are independent learners
may be interested in checking out SPN 205 Developing Spanish under the WebCT area.
If you are interested in teaching certification, look at the area for
this: Modern Language Teaching
Licensure. A number of us in the area have also recently
formed an umbrella group as an OFLA Alliance, CORE-FL (Coordinating Ohio's Regional Educators in Foreign Languages.
If possible, I spend part of each summer directing some aspect of our Study Abroad
program, either in Mexico or in Spain.
These are wonderful programs for improving Spanish language skills and
immersing yourself in great cultures. I highly recommend CSU's programs
to beginning students of Spanish, major or minor (or Latin American
Studies) students, or M.A. students. You will eventually be able to
link here to pictures taken during our programs.
When I'm not teaching or pursuing the latest research in one of my areas of
interest, I am an avid violist, holding the first desk position of the Cleveland
Philharmonic Orchestra, the finest semi-professional orchestra
in the region. We are justly proud of our long history of providing the best
in classical, affordable, music in the Cleveland area and of our conductor, William Slocum.
