CSU Study Abroad Scholarships


CSU offers the following scholarships for students who are interested in study abroad program.

    •   CSU Study Abroad Scholarship
    •   ODAMA Study Abroad Scholarship
    •   The Ohio International Consortium Scholarship
    •   John A. Chao Scholarship Award
    •   IFSA Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship for Non-Traditional Undergraduates
 

CSU Study Abroad Scholarship

This scholarship is meant to provide assistance to Cleveland State University students who are economically disadvantaged and have demonstrated both academic and leadership achievements to participate in study abroad programs. The award will range from $200 - $1000.

Application
Complete applications must be turned into Center for International Services and Programs (KB1150). Students who do not meet all of the eligibility requirements will be disqualified. A complete application will include:
1. Application form
2. Essay
3. Program acceptance letter (if not CSU program)
4. If you have not filed a FAFSA, a completed form should be turned in with this application

Deadlines
1. Summer Session 2008: March 3, 2008
2. Fall Semester 2008: May 16, 2008

ODAMA Study Abroad Scholarship

Established to provide assistance for economically disadvantaged students to participate in study abroad programs. The maximum award is $500.

Eligibility
1. Currently enrolled, full-time, degree seeking student at Cleveland State University.
2. Successful completion of one year of study at CSU.
3. Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
4. Complete application packet.

Application Process

A. Deadlines
1. October 15: Winter Break and Spring Semester Program.
2. Mar 15: Summer Semester Program
2. June 15: Fall Semester Program.

B. Application Packet

1. Application form.
2. Two Letters of Recommendation.
3. Program Acceptance letter (If not CSU program).
4. Essay.

Essay & Letters of Recommendation
Please attach an essay of approximately 500 words in which you describe how the study abroad experience supports your academic goals. Indicate how your study abroad experience will allow you to contribute to Cleveland State or to Greater Cleveland community.

In addition to your essay, two letters of recommendation are required. The recommendations should comment on your character, personal achievements, academic potential, commitment, initiative and the importance of an international experience for you. Reference letters should not be sent by family members or personal friends. Teachers, clergy, and employers/ supervisors are commonly asked to write such letters.

Selection Process
The committee will base its decision on the following criteria:
1. Academic performance.
2. An approved Study Abroad Program with relevant coursework.
3. Involvement in CSU and the Greater Cleveland community.
4. Essay.

The Ohio International Consortium Scholarship

The Ohio International Consortium provides a scholarship of $500 to student applicants from member institutions of the OIC, like Cleveland State University.

The applicant must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen who is a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate from an Ohio International Consortium school.
  • Be at least a rising junior with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA.
  • Be accepted into an approved study abroad program for at least one semester or quarter in which the student is affiliated with a foreign university (not a language school).
    Submit a 500 word essay explaining reasons for studying abroad.
Deadlines:
Spring Semester: October 15
Summer Semester: February 15
Fall Semester: June 15

John A. Chao Scholarship Award

This Scholarship provides financial support to CSU students/scholars studying/doing research in China or Taiwan as well as to Chinese students from China or Taiwan studying at CSU. The Scholarship honors Professor John A. Chao for his excellent services to the University community and for international recognition of his scholarly work, especially for his instrumental dedication in establishing collaborative relations between CSU and various Chinese Universities.

The endowed fund will:

  1. Provide financial support to CSU students studying in China or Taiwan.
  2. Provide financial support to Chinese students from China or Taiwan studying at Cleveland State University.
  3. Promote faculty and staff involvement in international professional activities such as teaching, research, and attending conferences in China and Taiwan.
  4. Bring Chinese scholars from China and Taiwan to Cleveland State University for professional activities such as lecturers, research, or advanced study.

IFSA Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship for Non-Traditional Undergraduates

The IFSA Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship for Non-Traditional Undergraduates will award up to $5,000 per semester for non-traditional undergraduates students (25 years or older and enrolled full-time) who wish to immerse themselves in a foreign culture for an extended period of time. In the past, the majority of non-traditional CSU study abroad participants were only able to attend short-term programs due to time and financial constraints. This scholarship is designed to address their specific needs and assist them in pursuing what might otherwise be impossible, spending a significant time studying and learning abroad.

Interested students are urged to contact the study abroad staff at the Center for International Services and Programs with any questions. The scholarship application deadline is April 15, 2008.
