Scholarship Title: The Rhodes Scholarship

 

Description:

The Rhodes scholarship is one of the oldest international education scholarships; the first American scholars date back to 1904. Every year 32 American scholars are chosen to represent the United States as they study for a second bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree at the University of Oxford located in Oxford, England AT NO COST. Students apply to be the representative of Cleveland State University. The selection committee reserves the right to not submit any of the applied applicants for the Rhodes Scholarship.



Who should apply:

  • Students who plan to complete a degree offered at the University of Oxford
  • A citizen of the United States
  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 24 years of age. (October 1, 1984 and on or before October 1, 1990)
  • Must have achieved academic standing sufficiently advanced to assure completion of a bachelor’s degree before October 1, 2009
  • Literary and scholastic attainments
  • Must have the energy to develop and use one’s talents to the fullest, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports.
  • Must devote and have devoted oneself to the following characteristics: truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindness, unselfishness and fellowship
  • Must have the moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings

 


Applicable Majors:

All majors are welcome to apply; however, the applicant must apply with an appropriate University of Oxford program in mind that is applicable to the student’s academic experience and interest.


What is the award:

Direct payment to the University of Oxford of all tuition fees (such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory fees, and certain other set charges.), plus a maintenance allowance of not less that £820 per month paid directly to the scholar.


When is the application due:

Application materials should be submitted by 5pm on Wednesday 10/01/2008 to Mr. Frank Feola, 2121 Euclid Ave. MC 219 Cleveland, OH 41115. Applications submitted after 5pm on 10/01/2008 will not be considered. Rhodes must receive application no later than 10/06/2008

Scholarship Title: Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

 

Description:

Established of 1986 the Barry M. Goldwater scholarship has a main focus on alleviating the United States shortage of mathematicians, scientists, and engineers. The most qualified CSU students’ applications (up to four) will be submitted to the Goldwater Foundation, which makes the final scholarship-offering decisions.

 

Who Should Apply?

  • Students intending to pursue careers in mathematics, natural science and/or engineering.
  • Students with junior or senior status in the 2008-2009 academic year.
  • Grade-point average of at least "B" (or the equivalent) and in the upper fourth of his or her class. (At CSU, students with a G.P.A. of 3.4 or above will be considered.)
  • A United States citizen, a permanent resident, or, in the case of nominees from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, a United States national. Nominations from permanent residents must include a letter of the nominee's intent to obtain U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the Permanent Resident Card (formerly known as the Alien Registration Card).

Applicable Majors:

  • Math, natural sciences, engineering, computer science, and medicine (only if you choose a research career).
  • Students who plan on becoming TEACHERS SHOULD NOT APPLY.
  • Students planning to study medicine can apply if they plan to go for a research career rather than a career as a practicing medical doctor.

What is the award:

The scholarship covers all expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually.


When is the application due to CSU:

On-line application materials should be submitted by 5pm on Monday, 12/3/2007. Applications submitted after 5pm on 12/3/2007 will mot be considered. CSU will notify the four nominees by 1/15/2008. Goldwater will contact students with their final decisions toward the end March 2008.

Scholarship Title: Harry S. Truman Scholarship

 

Description:

The Harry S. Truman scholarship fund is geared toward students who are juniors (at minimum), that are pursuing a graduate degree in any of the public services fields.

 

Who should apply?

  • People who plan on pursuing graduate degrees in any of the public services fields.
  • Have participated in student government and/or campus-based extracurricular activities
  • At the time of application, student will be full-time, pursuing a bachelor's degree with junior-level academic standing; have senior-level standing in the third year of college enrollment; or be a senior and a resident of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, or a Pacific Island.  Note:  Students who have completed their bachelor's degree or are already attending graduate school are not eligible for the Truman Scholarship.
  • U.S. citizen (or a U.S. national from a Pacific Island) or expect to receive my citizenship by the date the Scholarship will be awarded.
  • You believe there are conditions in our society or the environment that are troubling.

Up to $30,000 in pursuit of graduate degrees in any public services fields.

 

When is the application due:

Application materials should be submitted by 5pm on Wednesday, 1/28/2009 to Mr. Frank Feola, 2121 Euclid Ave. MC 219 Cleveland, OH 41115. Applications submitted after 5pm on 1/28/2009 will not be considered.  Applications must be received by February 3, 2009 for online submission.
