Universal Honors Experience Courses

What are the Universal Honors Experience Courses?

Each term, students in the Honors Program enroll in one of a variety of mini-courses (HON 101, HON 200, HON 201, HON 301) which are collectively referred to as the Universal Honors Experience.

Fall 2010


Hon 101 (01 and 02) – Introduction To Honors
T: 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. or W: 9:45 - 10:45 a.m.
An introduction to the University for Honors Students. Participants will be oriented to CSU, its facilities, rules and procedures and discuss the transition from high school to college. Opportunities for study abroad, internships, and research experiences will also be reviewed. Required of all new first-year students in the Honors Program

Hon 200 (01) – Model UN
Time TBA
Students volunteer to assist with High School Model UN program. Requires attending a mandatory training session at a date/time to be announced. Requires volunteering over a weekend to assist with Model UN.

Hon 200 (02) – Reading Club
T TH: 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Participants read and discuss a variety of books in an informal setting led by an instructor.

HON 200 (03) – Service Learning
Time TBA
Participants will be required to do a minimum of 8 hours of service work over the course of the semester and participate in an orientation session at the beginning of the semester (time to be announced).

Hon 201 (01) – Sports Appreciation
W: 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Participants engage in a variety of sports; no experience or skill required.

Hon 201 (02) – Newsletter
T: 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.
Participants produce an Honors Program newsletter – including planning, researching and writing articles, design and layout, photography, etc.

Hon 201 (03) – Service Learning
Th: 3 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Participants work with area high school students on the production of a video on an issue of community concern.

Hon 201 (04) – STEM Tutoring
M: 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Participants volunteer to tutor students at an area science magnet school. Occasional meetings with the faculty leader are required.

Hon 201 (05) – Yoga
T TH: 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Introductory yoga class. No experience required.

Hon 201 (06) Urban Issues Forum
M: 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
Participants attend and discuss on-line several events at the Levin College of Urban Affairs focused on urban issues. Two or three face-to-face meetings with the instructor will be required during the semester.
