PhD Student Awarded in Nanotech Presentation

Chan Award
The AIChE Annual Meeting is the premier educational forum for chemical engineering professionals interested in innovation and professional growth. The Nanoscale Science & Engineering Forum (NSEF) sponsored the annual Graduate Student Award Program, November  15-20, 2020. AIChE and NSEF promote communication and networking among engineers and scientists who share interests in research and technology development at the atomic, molecular or macromolecular levels of materials processes and products. Its annual student competition provides access to information on recognized and promising chemical engineering processes and methods from across the globe.

The Nanotechnology Awards Category presents graduate students whose research achievement and presentation in bionanotechnology demonstrate a high level of excellence. As Cleveland State University's lead presenter, Ka Keung Chan, pre-recorded a 15-minute talk and then addressed live questions from audience members via chat. In the category of Carbon Nanomaterials, a panel of judges selected CSU as 3rd place, overall, in the research presentation entitled: Synergistic Effects of Carbohydrate Identity and Polymer Chain Length on Creating Glycopolymer-Wrapped Carbon Nanotubes

Presenting Author:
Ka Keung Chan, Lead Presenter and Ph.D. Candidate, Clinical Bioanalytical Chemistry

Co-Authors:
Michael Cantwell, M.S. Chemical & Biomedical Engineering

Xue-Long Sun, Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry

Geyou Ao, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Chemical & Biomedical Engineering

First and second place awards were earned by graduate students from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology of South Korea and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne of Switzerland, respectively. Additional competitors in the nanotechnology category included students from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, along with U.S. competitors from University of Massachusetts (Amherst), Texas A&M and University of Florida.

AIChE is the world's leading organization for chemical engineering professionals, with more than 60,000 members from more than 110 countries. AIChE has the breadth of resources and expertise in core process industries and emerging areas, such as translational medicine.
