Preparing a Teaching Portfolio

March 3, 2015 (rescheduled from February 19, 2015)
11:30 am - 12:30 pm
RT 401

All faculty, especially new, adjunct faculty, teaching assistants and doctoral students are encouraged to attend this workshop.

Do you have a class that you would like to improve? Or one that needs to be updated? Wondering how to begin to think about your teaching and student learning in new ways? Teaching Portfolios are collections of class-related artifacts created by both teachers and students. They can be used both for evaluative purposes and as a way to consciously improve one’s own teaching practices. This session is the starting point for faculty who would like to create a teaching portfolio for one of their classes. Participants create their own teaching portfolios focusing on a specific class at CSU, and use this portfolio to reflect upon, critique, and potentially refine their own teaching practices.

This session will describe typical components in a teaching portfolio and explain the ways in which it may be used to analyze and improve teaching and learning activities for a given class. Participants can then work one-on-one with the Director of the Center or another faculty member  to develop a teaching portfolio. This one-on-one mentorship occurs during the spring semester but can be adjusted to the individual faculty member’s needs.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Learn components and uses of a teaching portfolio
  • Understand how a teaching portfolio can aid an instructor in improving teaching practices
  • Consider possible application of a teaching portfolio to one’s own teaching assignment
