Graduate Student Resource Center

Career & Leadership Resources

Throughout the month of April, approximately 100 Masters, Professional and Ph.D. students took a giant step in career preparedness.  These students participated in all or portions of a 3-part series offered by the Graduate Student Resource Center on career and leadership development.

The Professional Leadership Panel on April 16th brought together senior leadership in Business, Engineering/HR and Academia in a discussion on preparing and empowering graduate students to seek out leadership positions in their field.

How to Prepare for an Academic Job Search was the topic of the April 22nd session for graduate students gathered in Parker Hannifin Hall. Panelists discussed various types of faculty positions and the unique roles of faculty from institutions that differ in research, teaching, and service. Doctoral students learned first-hand about the search process and gained useful advice on research and teaching philosophy.

CSU faculty and a career expert from the Career Success Network presented the final session of the series, Preparing a Professional Curriculum Vitae, on April 27th.  The panelists discussed the content and technicalities required for drafting a clear and comprehensive CV and cover letter.

Master of Psychology student, Patricia DellaCourt, shared her comments on the academic job search panel, “It was good for me to learn of the emphasis on independent research and publications in addition to teaching experience and the value of national professional society membership.”  Erica Wiley Whiteman, Ph.D. student in Urban Education, shared, "The speakers helped me to appreciate them as people who had followed the same paths I hope to follow and they helped me to think about my own career trajectory."
