Graduate Faculty Overview

Introduction

The University Graduate Faculty are responsible for:

  1. determining the educational objectives for the Graduate College;
  2. establishing standards to achieve these objectives;
  3. coordinating Graduate College educational policies with University academic colleges, and
  4. fostering graduate education and scholarly research.

Members of the Cleveland State University Graduate Faculty have met Graduate College standards of sustained scholarship or creative activity, or alternatively have been recognized for their accomplishments as practitioners in their disciplines. Members hold the terminal degree, usually the doctoral degree, in their field.

Only members of the Graduate Faculty may:

  1. teach graduate level courses numbered 600 and above on a reoccurring basis;
  2. chair or serve as a voting member of an exit project, master’s thesis, or doctoral dissertation committee;
  3. chair a comprehensive examination committee for graduate students;
  4. serve as a graduate program director or as a member of a program of graduate studies committee; and
  5. serve as a voting member of the University Graduate Council.

Term of Appointment

Regular Graduate Faculty appointments are for five years. Full-time faculty receiving their terminal degrees within the last two years but who have not, as yet, fulfilled the scholarship requirements for a regular appointment may apply for an initial three-year term. Consult the Guidelines for Graduate Faculty Membership for eligibility requirements for regular five-year and initial three-year appointments.

Eligibility

All members of the Cleveland State University faculty under full-time contract, emeritus faculty, and University administrators who meet the eligibility requirements set forth in Section 2 of Article 8.4.2 of the Bylaws of the College of Graduate Studies may apply to be voting members of the University Graduate Faculty. Special status faculty (i.e., adjunct, clinical, visiting, part-time) who meet the eligibility requirements set forth in the Bylaws and the Guidelines for Graduate Faculty Membership may apply for Graduate Faculty status as non-voting members. Applications are evaluated and approved by the Graduate Faculty Review Committee and the University Graduate Council.

Application Criteria

Regular faculty, emeritus, or special status faculty may apply for Graduate Faculty membership on the basis of their accomplishments as either a research scholar or a practitioner in their field. Consult the Guidelines on the Graduate College homepage.
