Introduction

The University provides an opportunity for individuals who hold a baccalaureate (or higher) degree to enroll in graduate courses without admittance to a graduate degree, certificate, or licensure program. Non-Degree status is designed for those who want to take graduate courses for professional growth and/or personal enrichment, or who wish to take a limited amount of course work to explore the possibility of later entering a graduate degree, certificate, or licensure program. (Note: Students with graduate Non-Degree status are not permitted to enroll in Cleveland State University graduate certificate or licensure programs.)

Academic Regulations

A Non-Degree student is subject to the same academic regulations which govern Degree-Seeking students.  For complete information on academic regulations, see the Cleveland State University Graduate Catalog.

Grades

The academic standing of a graduate student is expressed as a cumulative grade-point average.  The GPA is determined at the end of each semester by dividing the total quality points (the summation of the credit hours multiplied by the point value for each class) by the total credit hours attempted in courses in which the student has received a grade of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C, or F.  All grade-point averages are carried to two decimal places unrounded.  Grades for all 400-800 level courses taken on a letter-grade basis are computed into a student's graduate grade-point average.

Repeating a graduate course does not eliminate an earlier recorded grade on a graduate student's transcript.  With the exception of courses designed to have variable content from semester to semester, repeating a course does not affect the number of credit hours earned by a student.

Withdrawal Policy

During the academic year, a student may withdraw from a course through the end of the tenth week of the semester. Withdrawal deadlines can be found online at  http://www.csuohio.edu/registrar/dates.html.

After the final date for withdrawal, a student may officially withdraw from a course only by means of a petition approved by the College of Graduate Studies Petitions Committee (see the Exceptions and Petitions section of this Catalog).

Please note that the University Graduate Council has determined that poor academic performance on a midterm examination or in other course requirements does not constitute sufficient grounds for granting a student a late withdrawal from a course.

Withdrawal from a course without approval, as indicated above, constitutes a failure, and a grade of F will be recorded on the student’s record.

Academic Dismissal

Mandatory dismissal by the Registrar occurs if a student:

 (a)     receives two grades of F, or
 (b)     accumulates a total of 9 credit hours of grades less than "B" and has a cumulative gradepoint average of less than 3.00.

Re-Enrollment

Former Non-Degree Graduate students who wish to re-enroll and who were in good academic standing at CSU at the end of their last term in attendance, and who have not attended another institution since last attending CSU, must file a "Re-Enrollment Application" with the University Registrar if there has been a lapse of two or more academic terms (excluding Summer term) in their attendance at Cleveland State University.

Former Non-Degree Graduate students who have been dismissed from the University must file a petition with the Graduate College Petitions Committee for readmission in order to resume Non-Degree Graduate work.  See the "Downloadable Forms" menu for the Petitions Form. (Please refer to the "Readmission" section of the Graduate Catalog.)

Petitions

Students who seek to be exempt from a University academic requirement or regulation must file a petition with the Graduate College Petitions Committee.  Petition forms and instructions are available from the College of Graduate Studies (Parker Hannifin Hall, Room 227) and the Graduate Admissions Office (Rhodes Tower - West 204) or on-line.

Changing from Non-Degree to Graduate Degree, Certificate, or Licensure Status

Non-Degree Graduate students who wish to enter a graduate degree, certificate, or licensure program must submit a graduate admission application.  The application and all credentials required for admission must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Admissions.  All degree, certificate, or licensure admission requirements noted in the Graduate Catalog must be met by the applicant.  Course work taken as a Non-Degree student will be considered in determining eligibility for admission.
