This was my second Fulbright award. The first took me to Mali in the mid-1980s, ostensibly for one year, but I loved it so much there, I ended up staying for nearly five years! I enjoyed Kenya equally, but returned to CSU to put what I had learned to immediate use. I taught anthropology at the graduate level at the University of Nairobi and did research and did research on gender and culture change among the Maasai. My research involved digital video recording; so far, one film, Womanhood and Circumcision: Three Maasai Women Have Their Say, has gone into distribution from a series of three that I am working on. I use the footage in my courses on cultures of Africa, anthropology of gender, and visual anthropology, so all of my students have benefited from my Fulbright experiences.
