Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria: 1. Applicants must be currently enrolled at CSU as full-time undergraduate students, with a class status of rising sophomore, junior or senior; 2. Applicants must demonstrate financial need; 3. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA at or above 3.0; 4. Applicants must submit an essay on the topic “How do you plan to use your STEM education at Cleveland State University to improve the human condition locally, nationally and/or globally?”

Preference will be given to applicants who are graduates of MC2STEM High School and are majoring in a STEM program at Cleveland State (or MC2STEM graduates majoring in non-STEM programs at Cleveland State, if there are insufficient candidates in STEM programs). Students majoring in STEM programs at Cleveland State who are graduates of any school within the Cleveland Metropolitan School District are also encouraged to apply.

Mr. Carlos Cortes was a School Psychologist in the Cleveland schools and a supporter of CSU’s School Psychology program. To honor Mr. Cortes’ memory and support the CSU community, Eileen Cortes established this fund with the intention of awarding scholarships to deserving students. The recipient of the Eileen C. and Carlos F. Cortes Endowment Fund Scholarship must be a psychology major or graduate student (in good standing) in the Department of Psychology. Dr. Schuerger was a valued member of the Faculty of the Department of Psychology at CSU until 2003, and is currently Professor Emeritus. The Endowment Fund was created to honor his legacy by providing scholarships for deserving students. Two awards will be given each year. According to the Fund Guidelines, there is a preference for the recipient of the Dr. James M. Schuerger Endowment Fund Scholarship to be a member of an under-represented student group; to demonstrate financial need; and to be an undergraduate major or graduate student in the Department of Psychology.
