We encourage students to take the placement tests prior to attending Orientation. Taking the placement tests early offers students many benefits including more time to take the tests and the opportunity to retake a test if necessary. Sample tests for both English and Math are available on the Placement Testing website.

Placement tests are offered at the downtown Cleveland State campus, the East Center in Solon, and the West Center in Westlake. The East and West Centers offer convenient evening & weekend hours as well as free parking. Please call to schedule an appointment if taking the placement tests at the East or West Centers. Placement testing at the downtown campus is on a walk-in basis; please visit the Placement Testing website for office hours.

CampusNet explains what tests students need to take based on the Math and Verbal scores from the ACT/SAT. English

All students who took the ACT/SAT exam will automatically be placed into an English course based on their score. Any student without an ACT/SAT score or dissatisfied with their placements may choose to take a two-hour writing exam. Students may take the written examination prior to or after Orientation; however, it will not be offered on the day of the program.

Math

Based upon your ACT/SAT score, students may be required to take the math placement test. Students may take this test prior to Orientation or on the day of Orientation. If you are exempted from the math tests based upon your score and dissatisfied with your placement; you may opt to take the test before or after attending Orientation in an effort to place higher.

Note: Engineering and Science majors are strongly encouraged to take the tests prior to Orientation to place as high as possible.
