Financial Aid

Grants

Grants do not have to be repaid and are based on financial need. You must submit the FAFSA to be considered for grants. There are three types of grants: University, State, and Federal.

University

University Grant - A University-funded program to assist CSU students with meeting their financial need.

Residence Hall Grant - A University-funded program for undergraduate students who contract to live in the CSU residence halls for the full academic year. Eligibility is based on financial need. A minimum 2.25 cumulative GPA is required for continuing students.

State

Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) - A state-funded grant program for undergraduate, degree seeking, Ohio residents with an expected family contribution of $2190 or less and a maximum household income of $75,000. Students are limited to 10 semesters of eligibility and the award amount is prorated based on enrollment. Federal

**Eligibility for Year Round Pell Grant is discontinued effective beginning fall 2011**

Federal Pell Grant Policy Effective for the 2011-2012 Academic Year.

Effective beginning fall semester, 2011 the U.S. Department of Education has discontinued the ability of a student to receive Federal Pell grants on a year-round basis. This means students are limited to receiving only up to 100% of a Pell Grant award during an academic year (fall, spring and summer).

Students who begin receiving Federal Pell Grants July 1, 2008 will be subject to a lifetime aggregate limit of 18 full-time semesters.

CSU considers summer 2011 as part of the 2010-2011 academic year for awarding Federal Pell Grants. Therefore a CSU student who received Pell Grant funds to attend CSU this summer did not use any of their 2011-2012 Federal Pell Grant funds.

Students who attended another institution this summer and used a portion of their 2011-2012 Federal Pell Grant may face a reduction in the Federal Pell award amount for spring 2012 semester at CSU.

Likewise, a student who transfers to CSU mid-year and uses Pell grant funds at another school may have their Pell grant adjusted for the spring semester.

It is possible that CSU will award Pell and loan funds during an initial awarding period only to learn at a later date that the student had used grant and loan funds at another school. Federal regulations require CSU to reverse those funds and bill the student.

The Federal Pell schedule of 100% includes the following breakdown for a semester:

  • Full-time enrollment (12 or more credits per semester) = 50% Pell Grant
  • Three-quarters time enrollment (9, 10 or 11 credits per semester) = 37.5% Pell Grant
  • One-half - time enrollment (6, 7 or 8 credits per semester) = 25% Pell Grant
  • Less than one-half time (5 or less credits per semester) = 12.5% Pell Grant

Examples:

  • Students who attend fall semester 2011 and spring semester 2012 full-time will not have any Pell Grant eligibility for summer semester, 2012.
  • Students who enroll full-time fall and only half-time in spring 2012 will have 25% of their Pell award to be used towards summer, 2012 for enrollment of six or more credits.

These examples are based on students meeting all financial aid eligibility requirements.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) - A Federally-funded grant program established to help meet the educational costs of exceptionally needy students. Eligibility is determined from FAFSA information. Only degree-seeking undergraduate students are eligible for the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG).

The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) and the National Science and Mathematics Access to retain Talent Grant (National Smart Grant) were discontinued effective with the 2011-2012 academic year.
