Overview
K-12 outreach activities, overseen by a full-time Education Coordinator, achieve the early student-college-industry
interaction needed for a future filled with more transportation professionals. Original activities involved
just starting a conversation about how to get engineering - the precursor to transportation safety careers - taught
in local primary and secondary schools.
Outreach steps taken since have included offering summer engineering education conferences for K-12
teachers, participating in grant-funded curriculum redesign projects at the high school level, providing site-visits
for grade schoolers to construction sites and university labs, and hosting student-centered design competitions.
Going forward, such outreach seeks to catalyze the region into preparing more and more students for advanced
transportation safety and construction careers in college.
