Fenn
Academy Pathway to Engineering Camp

Twenty eight High school sophomores and juniors were served from July
13-31. Students resided in the Fenn Tower residence hall. The camp was
funded by the Ohio Board of Regents and focused on sustainable and renewable
energy. Most students were eligible to receive college and high school
credits and all students participated in interesting field trips, recreational
activities and community service.
Fenn Academy Activities
During the 2008/09 academic year more than 2,000
students at thirty-four member high schools were served through Fenn
Academy outreach activities. Ten area corporations contributed funds
for FA operations or scholarships, and fourteen FA offices enabled staff
to provide advising, meet with high school teachers and create a visible
presence of engineering in a five county region. Events included Engineering
Activity Days at CSU, job shadowing, engineering competitions like VEX
Robotics and engineering off campus lectures by engineering faculty.
Fenn Academy staff also worked with the UTC to assist with the summer
program for teachers.
THE USA’S FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN ASTRONAUT
VISITS CSU
Dr. Guion Bluford, America’s first African American
astronaut, visited the CSU campus on Wednesday, November 18, 2009.
Dr. Bluford shared his experiences during a luncheon presentation
with Fenn Academy students visiting from CMSD’s Design Lab High
School, the Cleveland School of Science, Shaker Hts middle school.
The event was sponsored by the CSU Library in partnership with the
Fenn Academy.
FENN STUDENT AMBASSADORS PROMOTE ENGINEERING
AT
COMMUNITY EVENTS:
Ten undergraduate and graduate students representing the engineering disciplines
at Fenn are actively involved in promoting the engineering profession
throughout the Greater Cleveland area. Ambassadors attend college
fairs, conduct personal tours of Fenn and the CSU campus, assist with
Engineering Activity Day events, and make phone calls to Fenn Academy
students to encourage their pursuit of an engineering career. The
Fenn Ambassadors for 2009/10 include John Beard, Katia Dean, Maria
Baker, Aimee McConnell, Amrita Samaroo, Bharat Vyakaranam, Maria Hatzigeorgiu,
David Raschar, Paul Vinci and Krishna Aditya Kotaprolu.
VEX Robotics Competition
The second annual VEX Robotics competition at CSU will take place
on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at CSU. The event is open to middle and
high school students and focuses strongly on teamwork, leadership
and problem solving as well as STEM related career opportunities.

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS FEATURE FENN COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING INFORMATION :
Lakewood High School and Cleveland Heights High School invited Fenn Academy
to sponsor a table at their respective college fairs on September 24 and
October 14, 2009. Hundreds of students and parents had the opportunity
to speak to a Fenn Academy representative to learn more about FA benefits,
including job shadowing, scholarships, individual tours and more.
FENN
ACADEMY WELCOMES NEW SCHOOLS AND CORPORATE SPONSORS
The following new schools and companies are a part of
a growing partnership to encourage students to become engineers:
Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company
Shaker Heights High School
Lorain County Joint Vocational High School
Richmond Heights High School
GOODYEAR
PARTNERSHIP BENEFITS YOUNG WOMEN
The Fenn Academy’s recent partnership with
Goodyear in Akron led to Fenn’s participation in the Engineering
Day for Young Women on April 18, 2009. More than 300 girls from throughout
NE Ohio and the Greater Akron area took part in interesting career
seminars, met Goodyear’s engineers and heard from guest speakers
who encouraged the girls to pursue their engineering career goals.
RICHMOND
HEIGHTS STUDENTS, PARENTS AND EDUCATORS VISIT FENN
AND TOUR DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND
A group of forty-two students, parents and educators
from Richmond Heights High School got an expanded view of the University
and downtown Cleveland during their visit on September 19, 2009.
Led by Richmond Heights board member Ms. Teri Lyles and the high
school principal, Mr. Nathan Bishko, the group was transported to
campus by Lolly the Trolley. Visitors saw all the new developments
taking place on campus, had a pizza lunch and viewed an engineering
presentation. Following their campus tour the group boarded the
Trolly for a circle tour of downtown to see historic sites and new
developments. The experience gave everyone a positive view of CSU’s
metropolitan neighborhood and encouraged students to pursue an engineering
degree.
FENN
WORKS WITH CSU ADMISSIONS TO PROVIDE SENIOR DAY EVENT
The Fenn College of Engineering worked closely with
the CSU Admissions office to hold “Senior Day” at CSU
on October 14, 2009. The event enabled students from throughout NE
Ohio to spend the day on campus, attend program specific events and
sit in on a class related to their respective field of interest. About
thirty students received an overview of all available engineering
programs at Fenn and received a presentation from Dr. Majid Rashidi
about sutainable and renewable enenergy. Dr. Rashidi explained his
Wind Amplification system, a patented new device designed to capture
the power of wind.
HISPANIC
AWARENESS WEEK PROVIDES FOCUS ON ENGINEERING CAREERS
About twenty-five junior and senior high school students from CMSD
high schools, including James Ford Rhodes and Max Hayes, visited the
CSU campus on October 1, 2009 for a tour, lunch and individual college
presentations. Students visiting Fenn learned about available engineering
fields, with additional detail provided by staff and faculty about
civil engineering and engineering technology. Students saw a video
about the DEKA prosthetic arm, rode a Segway Personal Transporter
and drove an experimental Ford Focus in the University Transportation
Center’s lab.
