On 27 June 2009, the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board (MGA) recognized the IEEE Cleveland State University Student Branch of the IEEE Cleveland Section as a recipient of the 2008 MGA Student Branch Membership Growth Award for success in member recruitment and retainment for Region 2.
Each year, a Student Branch in each Region is recognized as having achieved the highest rate of growth. The greatest level of growth is based on a composite rating, considering growth in numbers and percentage, relative to other Student Branches within each Region.
Officers during the award period were:
William Witt (president fall 08), Kevin Kelsey (president spring
08), Joe Lukes (secretary fall 08), John Oyster (treasurer both
semesters), and Paul Kruger (secretary spring 08).
The IEEE branch has been the most active it has been in the recent years. In 2008, they completed an electric gokart to promote awareness of electric vehicle possibilities, which was showcased at the 2008 IEEE Region 2 Student Activities Conference at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. In the Fall of 2008 they started building a "micromouse" robot which navigates and solves mazes on its own, to compete in regional IEEE competitions. At the same time we designed and built a vacuum-tube audio (guitar) amplifier which placed in the Region 2 project showcase. IEEE also has various social events, technical and nontechnical speakers, and factory tours throughout the schoolyear.
