Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Message from the Chair

Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

First of all, I want to thank you for your interest in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. We, twenty six full-time faculty members and two secretaries along with several adjunct professors, are here to make sure you succeed in classrooms and achieve your professional goals in your future in the area of electrical, computer and software engineering. You are in the right track as this area has always been one of most demanding areas in the job market. According to the statistics from US Department of Labor, employment in the fields of Computer system analysts, Database administrators, Information Security Analysts, Network and Computer Systems Administrators, Software Developers, and Computer Network Architects is expected to grow faster or much faster than average of all occupations for the 2010-2020 decade.

Our goal in our three undergraduate programs (BEE, BCE, and BSCS) is to provide students early-on and hands-on experience in electrical engineering and computer science subjects. You will be presented course materials in a problem-oriented, design-oriented context that facilitates a better understanding of the subjects and leads to successful professional careers after you graduate. Excellent co-op and internship programs are offered in collaboration with industry partners such as Parker Hannifin, Rockwell Automation, GE Lighting, ABB, NASA and Cleveland Medical Device. Our emphasis on Active Learning in undergraduate education results in excellent performance in regional and national competitions. For instance, our IEEE student members devastated the competition at Region 2 Student Activities Conference in 2013 in West Virginia by garnering four first places out of the eight that took place! The four competitions are: Micromouse Robotics Competition with an without Kit, Brown Bag Competition, and Physics competition.

We offer three master's programs (MSEE, MSSE, and MCIS) as well as a doctoral (DRE) program. In these programs, students will aspire to learn and to participate in research projects with the faculty, and exchange ideas with their peers in a nurturing environment. Our faculty received grants of $2.6 million from National Science Foundation - Computing in Secondary Schools (in collaboration with University of California, San Diego), Optimal Prosthesis Design with Energy, A New Model for Password Security, and An Integrative Hands-on Approach to Security Education for Undergraduate Students (in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University). Research activities are also supported by industry sponsors like GE, NASA, Ford Motor Company, ETRI, Parker Hannifin, and Rockwell as well as other national agencies such as American Diabetes Association and National Institutes of Health. These funds are used to support our graduate students who will research both in theoretical foundations and in applying such theories to practice.

Lastly, thank you again for your interest. If you should find that you would like additional information about the department or the degree programs we offer, please don't hesitate to contact us. Our faculty will be happy to respond to e-mail inquiries, and you may call the departmental office at any time to arrange an appointment with a faculty advisor.
