Engineering Activity Day
High schools who are members of the Fenn Academy Program are eligible to participate in free Engineering Activity Day events in the Fenn College of Engineering at Cleveland State University.
Engineering Activity Days include the following:
Engineering related lab activities that expose 9th – 12th grade students to concepts related to civil, mechanical, electrical, computer, or chemical engineering, as well as electronic or mechanical engineering technology. Some activities are “hands on” while others have more of a lecture format. Opportunities may be available to visit CSU’s “green” rooftop garden, Driving Simulator Lab or Wind Amplification System. All activities are subject to the availability of professors and facilities and may be changed if required.
Most lab activities last from thirty minutes to one hour, led by professors, staff or graduate students. Groups of thirty (30) or less are recommended. Visiting schools are responsible for providing adequate supervision of their students. We strongly recommend at least one teacher to supervise every fifteen students. CSU permission forms are required and the completed forms should be given to your CSU host upon arrival. Please invite students to participate who express some degree of interest in the engineering profession. Students in STEM related classes are strongly encouraged to participate.
Upon arrival visiting groups will receive a snack followed by a thirty minute Powerpoint presentation entitled “What Do Engineers Do?” Students will learn about various career opportunities, as well as how to prepare in high school for an undergraduate engineering program. The Cooperative Education Program and Honors Program will also be explained.
A free pizza lunch will be provided, including an interesting guest speaker or video presentation. The demonstration of a Segway Personal Transporter may also be included. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions regarding the engineering profession and college life at the end of their visit. A campus tour may also be provided with advance notice.
The cost of bus transportation and a substitute teacher will be reimbursed upon request, not to exceed $300, as long as funding is available. Please inquire when scheduling your visit. Schools must send in an invoice to receive a reimbursement. Visits should be scheduled at least three weeks in advance and may take place from October through the end of April. Visits are available Monday through Friday, either from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. or from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
