2009 FENN ACADEMY PATHWAY TO ENGINEERING CAMP HAS MANY ACHIEVEMENTS

The 2009 Fenn Academy Pathway to Engineering Summer Camp ended on July 31, 2009 with a recognition luncheon held in CSU’s Fenn Tower residence hall for students and their parents. The camp served a total of twenty-eight tenth and eleventh grade students for three weeks. Participants came from high schools in Lakewood, Rocky River, Westlake, Bay Village, Cleveland, Twinsburg, and Strongsville. Students stayed overnight, Monday through Friday, and engaged in activities related to sustainable and renewable energy, including tours of Ford Motor Company, Sawyer Technical Materials LLC, NASA and the Cleveland Clinic. Students also took part in hands-on engineering activities including building model fuel cell cars and ergonomic chairs. They also saw interesting presentations from local engineers related to energy conservation and developing patents. Additional activities included a trip on the Goodtime III and visits to the Cleveland Zoo, the Natural History Museum, the Cleveland Art Museum and the Great Lakes Science Center. Evening recreation and games, as well as a night at a Cleveland Indians game, encouraged students to build new friendships. Further activities were designed to enlighten students about their community and to encourage them to live and work in northeast Ohio upon graduation from college. Students also received useful information about STEM related careers from engineering professors and staff from the Fenn College of Engineering and learned about the benefits of belonging to organizations like the Cleveland Engineering Society. As a part of the curriculum, Pathway participants also prepared individual powerpoint presentations that will be used to encourage younger students in their respective school districts to further explore STEM fields. Students also completed six hours of community service at a local hunger center.

As a result of their participation, students who successfully completed the program will receive a $750 stipend, and if eligible, most will receive high school and college credits.
The future looks bright for Pathway students. As they continue their education, they will participate in year round activities, including special seminars, on campus mentoring with current college students or professors and job shadowing at local engineering firms. Several may also be eligible for internships or Fenn Academy scholarships if they enroll in CSU’s Fenn College of Engineering. Clearly, students are well on their Pathway to success.

The Beginning of the Camp.......

In response to the growing need of educating the technical work force of the future, the Fenn College of Engineering at CSU has invited the West Shore Career Technical Education District to be a part of a three-week residential summer camp at Cleveland State University from July 13-31, 2009. The West Shore Career Technical Education District is composed of students from Lakewood High School., Westlake High School., Bay Village high School., & Rocky River High School.

This exciting experience is designed for thirty Project Lead the Way high school students who have completed the 10th and 11th grade, and will engage them in learning opportunities in engineering for college credit.

Benefits to Students:

  • The activities in this camp are centered on engaged learning for the participating students, developing hands-on experiences, and understanding of energy related engineering concepts in our day-to-day lives. The students will be introduced to different forms of energy, the first and second laws of Thermodynamics, and small and large scale renewable energy innovations.
  • The participating high school students will earn $250 per week during these three weeks; earn 2 hours of university credits ( if enrolled in the Project Lead The Way Program ) and 3 hours of Independent Study high school credits ( at the discretion of the student's high school ) if all requirements are met. The students will be housed from Monday through Friday in the newly renovated Fenn Tower residence hall at Cleveland State University.  Students will be supervised by CSU and West Shore Career Technical staff.

This camp has been financially supported by the Ohio Board of Regents. You are encouraged to apply for this opportunity in your high school and participate in paving the way for a bright future for yourself and your community. Call (216) 529-4163 for more information.
