Blackboard CE6 Online Request Forms
Blackboard (WebCT) CE6 course sites begin as an empty “shell.” There are three kinds of shells faculty can request: Regular, Developmental, or Community shells.
REQUESTING A COURSE SHELL
- Complete the appropriate form below; Be sure to include ALL required information.
- You will be asked to provide information about your course that can be found in CampusNet. Use these instructions for a complete illustration.
- Only requests submitted via the appropriate form below will be processed. Please do not email or call with your course shell request.
Note: Faculty do NOT need to request regular course shells for Online and Blended courses as listed in CampusNet. The Center for eLearning will create elearning courses based on CampusNet as they appear in the registration system.
- Course shell requests are generally processed the same day if received before 3:00 pm.
- Regular course shells are created by an automated process overnight and will be ready the next day. A link to the course will appear in My Blackboard.
- Regular course shells can be requested when registration for the semester is opened. Other types of shells may be requested as needed.
- The Center for eLearning recommends you request regular course shells at least 3 weeks in advance of a semester start.
REGULAR SHELL
- Used for teaching regular semester/term courses.
- Is automatically tied to the CampusNet registration system. Students who register for a section of a course through CampusNet, will automatically be enrolled into the corresponding section inside Blackboard CE6.
- Is created empty, but you can copy content from a previous section or other shell into the empty shell. No student information is copied over – just the course content.
- Faculty MUST request a new course shell for each section, each semester if you plan to use Blackboard CE6 for that course.
DEVELOPMENTAL SHELL
- Used as an environment to create a new course, especially if the course will not be taught until after the next semester.
- Can be used as a master where you keep permanent changes to the course.
- No students or other users are enrolled into this shell and you can experiment or add content as you see fit.
- You may copy content from a development shell into a regular shell as long as you are enrolled as a course designer or instructor in both shells.
COMMUNITY SHELL
- Used as a virtual resource center for a particular academic group (e.g students and faculty in an academic program).
- Not associated with any course section or semester; Communities are available to users until requested by the Community sponsor.
- May only be requested by faculty or departments for academic use.
- Faculty who sponsor a community shell are responsible for enrolling authorized users into the community shell; enrollments cannot be automated.
- Potential users should consider alternatives CSU’s CampusDrive file storage system, the social networking platform (available June, 2008) or a Wiki, such as PBWiki.
- Staff in the Center can assist you will evaluating what solutions will best fit your needs.
COURSE MIGRATIONS
The Center for elearning will also migrate content from the older, WebCT 4.1 server into the newer Blackboard (WebCT) CE6 platform. CSU no longer supports the WebCT4.1 platform. The Webct4.1 server will be officially decommissioned on August 15, 2008. As of that date, no further migrations will be made and all content stored in that server environment will no longer be available.
