Burke-Rosen Scholarship in Economics - 2007-2008

The fifth annual Burke-Rosen Scholoarship in Economics was awarded to Ms. Kim Davis (for the Fall 2007 semester) and Mr. John Gilroy (for the Spring 2008 semester).

Ms. Davis is a resident of Hinckley, Ohio. She has been with Cleveland State University since fall of 2004. She is majoring in Economics with a minor in Mathematics. Ms. Davis is currently a principal at Legacy Financial Associates and is looking to pursue a career in actuarial science after graduation. She is also a mother of an 11-year old boy.

Mr. Gilroy, a resident of Mentor, Ohio, has been with Cleveland State University since summer of 2002. He has a major in Economics and expects to finish in the summer of 2008. His scholarly interest is in the area of Law and Economics with a particular focus on economic analysis of antitrust and tort law. Following his graduation, he plans to enter a law school and pursue a career in law.

The Burke-Rosen Scholarship was created by two Professors Emeriti of the department - John Burke, Ph.D., and Harvey Rosen, Ph.D. - who both retired from Cleveland State University in 1993. The Burke-Rosen Scholarship is awarded annually to a student with senior year status who is an economics major. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.30 in economics coursework and a minimum overall grade point average of 3.25. The past recipients of the Scholarship were:

2003-2004: James Weikamp

Outstanding Major Award in Economics - 2007-2008

We are pleased to announce that Mr. John Gilroy is also the recipient of this year's Outstanding Major Award. Congratulations!

Recent Faculty Research Activities

Professor Yee Fei Chia attended the Midwest Economics Association Annual Conference in Chicago (March 14-16, 2008) and presented a paper entitled "Dollars and Pounds: The Impact of Household Income on Childhood Weight". She also presented this paper in a seminar at University of Akron on April 7, 2008.

Professor Sebastien Buttet presented his recent working paper, "Engines of Liberation: The Impact of Technological Progress in an Imperfect Competition Setting," at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland (February 14, 2008). [Presentation Slides]

Professor Vasilios Kosteas published an article entitled "Foreign Direct Investment and Productivity Spillovers: A Quantile Analysis" in International Economic Journal, Vol. 22 (1), pp. 25-41 (March 2008).

Professor Yee Fei Chia published an article entitled "Maternal Labor Supply and Childhood Obesity in Canada: Evidence from the NLSCY" in Canadian Journal of Economics, Vol. 41 (1), pp. 217-242 (February 2008).

Professor Vasilios Kosteas presented his recent working paper, "Social Skills and Promotions," at the Society of Labor Economics Conference (Chicago, May 3-5, 2007).

Professor Sebastien Buttet presented a working paper entitled "Engines of Liberation: The Impact of Technological Progress in an Imperfect Competition Setting" at two recent conferences: Midwest Economic Association Conference (University of Minnesota, March 23-25, 2007) and Midwest Macroeconomics Conference (Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, April 27-29, 2007). He also presented "An Equilibrium Model of Appliances Adoption and Labor Supply of Married Women" at Kent State University on December 6, 2007 as part of their departmental seminar series. Finally, "Engines of Liberation: The Impact of Technological Progress and Market Structure" was presented at University of Akron on February 9, 2007.

Professor Myong-Hun Chang presented a paper entitled "Non-Equilibrium Industry Dynamics with Knowledge-Based Competition: An Agent-Based Computational Model" at the Eastern Economic Association Annual Conference (New York City, February 2007) as well as at the 2007 International Conference of the System Dynamics Society (Boston, July 2007).
