2017 THE FIFTH OHIO K-12 CHINESE SPEECH & ESSAY CONTESTS

2017年第五届俄州K-12中文演讲&作文比赛

The Ohio K-12 Chinese Speech and Essays Contests is an annual competition for elementary, middle, and high school students from Ohio. During the competition, students compete by either composing an essay or giving a speech in Chinese on a selected topic. The contestants are judged by experienced Chinese language teachers, and prizes are awarded during a ceremony at the end of the contests.

I. Chinese Speech Contest Information

Registration and Rules

1. The contest is open to all K-12 students who are studying Chinese in Ohio. There is no limit to the number of participants from each school. Heritage students (those who could already speak Mandarin before taking Chinese in school) are also eligible.

 2. Based on the results of the preliminary screening, up to 180 finalists will be invited to Cleveland State University to compete on-site in the final round of the Speech Contest. The selected finalists who do not reside in the Cleveland Area are responsible for their own transportation. Finalists will be notified by Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at which time they will receive detailed information regarding the final round of the contest. Finalists must be present to compete in the final round on Saturday, April 8, 2017.

 3. Themes for students’ speeches are listed below. Students can choose one theme and are free to develop the content based on their own language learning and life experiences. The speech must be no more than four minutes in length. During the on-site contest, judges will ask ONE or TWO questions immediately following each contestant’s speech; question content will be based on the speech which was delivered.

5)中西文化比较  Comparison between Chinese and Western Cultures

 4. There will be 3 age groups. Within each age group, contestants will compete for one 1st place, two 2nd place, three 3rd place prizes. (If a heritage student wins any of the prizes, then another place will be added for non-heritage speakers to also win.) All qualified finalists who are present for the contest will be awarded a Certificate of Participation.

 Age Groups:

I. Grades K-5;

II. Grades 6-8;

III. Grades 9-12.

5. To be entered into the screening for the final round of competition, each participant must submit the following:

1) A complete online registration form, available at: https://goo.gl/forms/dx9XKgHvOLJ7qn5i1

2) The script of their speech in pinyin or Chinese characters.

3) Audio file (in MP3 format) of the student giving the speech--please upload this script and audio file to a Google drive, Dropbox, or other service, and email us the link to the file.

6. Participants’ Chinese teachers are responsible for collecting all of the scripts and audio files and sending them electronically to  ohioatc@gmail.com, by 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 26, 2017.

7. The Confucius Institute and OATC reserve the right to verify each registered student’s information and to confirm his/her teacher’s recommendation before invitations to take part in the final round of the contest are sent to contestants by email. Students who do not receive invitations to take part in the final round will not be eligible for the contest.

II. Chinese Essay Contest Information

Registration and Rules

2. Please complete the application form at https://goo.gl/forms/Lf8w7v4RnyLBgVtI2 and submit the student pledge form along with students’ essays electronically to ohioatc@gmail.com  

Entries must be received by 11:59pm on Sunday, March 26, 2017.

3. Please provide the following information on the empty space on the first page of each contestant’s essay:

1) Student’s name

2) Student’s essay category

3) Student’s school name and district

4) Student’s Chinese teacher’s full name

Please clearly print or type the information.  In addition, please make sure that the contestants only write on the front of the grid paper.  

4. Applicants can choose one topic from the list below:

Essay Contest Topic List:

1) 快乐学中文 A fun experience learning Chinese

2) 我的家____  My family

3) 我最棒  I am proud of myself

4) 我知道的中国 What I know about China

5)中西文化比较  Comparison between Chinese and Western Cultures

6) 一件有趣的事 An interesting life experience

 (Essays should be written in a narrative style.) 

5. Each essay entry should be written in Chinese characters by hand and contain between 100-500 characters ( including punctuation).  It is recommended that the contestants use the provided grid paper. 

6. There will be 3 age groups. Within each age group, contestants will compete for one 1st place, two 2nd place, three 3rd place prizes. (If a heritage student wins any of the prizes, then another place will be added for non-heritage speakers to also win.) All qualified finalists who are present for the contest will be awarded a Certificate of Participation.

Age Groups:

I. Grades K-5;

II. Grades 6-8;

III. Grades 9-12.

7. All entries must be the student’s original work*. No contestant may use an essay by another contestant in previous years or resubmit an essay that was previous submitted.

*Definition of “Original Independent Work”:

Essay must be drafted and written by an individual student author. No parental or teacher assistance/editing is allowed. Proper citation is required if others’ words are quoted or employed.

1.学生可以同时报名参见演讲比赛和作文比赛吗?

可以。学生可以只参加演讲比赛或者作文比赛,也可以同时报名参加两个比赛。

Can examinees enroll in both the speech contest and the essay contest?

Yes, students can enroll in the speech contest, the essay writing contest, or both of contests.

2.为什么采用按年龄分组的方式?

本次比赛采用按学生年龄和年级分组的方式,以使分组标准避免一切人为因素,做到标准统一,力求对每位选手客观、公正。

Why are contestants grouped by age?

The contestants are classified by age and grade to ensure the competition is age-appropriate for all participants, judges use appropriate and consistent standards,, and every contestant competes in an objective, fair environment.

3. 是否所有报名的学生都可以来现场参加比赛?

每组邀请60名报名选手来现场参加比赛。若每组报名学生超过60名,我们将根据选手提供的音频材料进行筛选。

Will everyone who registers take part in the final round of the competition?

We will select 60 candidates for each group to take part in the final competition. If there are more than 60 candidates in single group, we will select candidates for the final round based on the files provided by candidates.

4. 作文比赛获奖选手的奖品怎样发放?

我们会邀请作文比赛的优胜者和参与者于4月8日到演讲比赛现场来观摩和领奖。若获奖选手不能来现场领奖,我们将根据选手报名时填写的家庭地址,邮寄给学生获奖证书及奖品。

How will the prizes be distributed?

Prizes will be awarded to all contest participants on Saturday April 8, 2017. If a candidate is unable to come on that day, we will mail out their certificate of participation and/or their prize to the address they provide.

补充:Additional Information

1.在演讲比赛当天,等待比赛结果期间,有30-40 分钟的过渡时间,请各位老师在鼓励学生参赛的同时,也欢迎各位老师及学生上台表演节目。若您或学生愿意表演,请于3月26日之前将节目名字通过邮箱报给李娜老师(lin@columbusacademy.org )。赛事组委会会根据节目报名情况,筛选并邀请出6-8个节目上台表演。

At the final round of the competition, on Saturday April 8, 2017 at Cleveland State University, there will be a 30-40 minute break after the contest during which the judges will tally the results. We strongly encourage and welcome candidates to prepare a brief performance ahead of time to share with the group during the break. If you could like to perform on that day, please send your name and the title of your piece to Ms. Na Li at lin@columbusacademy.org.  The committee will select 6-8 pieces based on the quality of the show.

2. 比赛组委会设置“优秀指导教师”、“优秀组织教师”等奖项,授予荣誉证书。

The committee also will give the “Outstanding Instructional Teacher” award and the “Outstanding Organizational Teacher” award to teachers.
