Alex Machaskee

Alex Machaskee had been
the publisher, president, and chief executive of the Plain Dealer
for more than 15 years. As the leader of Northeastern Ohio's largest
media voice, Machaskee had been at the forefront of setting the
agenda in Cleveland news.
A native of Warren,
Ohio, Machaskee started his journalism career as a sports writer
and general assignment editor for the Warren Tribune, before joining
the Plain Dealer in 1960. After serving as general manager and vice
president, Machaskee was appointed publisher of Ohio's largest newspaper
in 1990.
Beyond his affinity
for delivering the news to more than 880,000 Plain Dealer subscribers
everyday, Machaskee is a strong business and community leader. In
the past, he has been awarded several honors in recognition of his
service to the Greater Cleveland business community, including the
International Business Executive of the Year by the World Trade
Center Cleveland, the Executive of the Year by Inside Business magazine,
and entrance into the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame.
Machaskee also serves
on the board of several prominent local non-profit organizations,
including the Greater Cleveland United Way, the Cleveland Foundation,
Leadership Cleveland, University Circle, the Great Lakes Science
Center, the Greater Cleveland Partnership, and the Urban League
of Greater Cleveland.
An advocate for cultural
diversity, Machaskee has been a leader of diversity communications
while at the Plain Dealer. Through his publication of the special
section Mosaic he has done much to recognize the international community
that finds its home in Cleveland.
Machaskee graduated
with a BA in marketing from Cleveland State University, and received
an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Cleveland State
in 1995, and again from the University of Akron in 1998. He and
his wife Carol live in Beachwood.
