Expertise His research focuses children’s programming, including teleliteracy for gifted and learning disabled children. He is also interested in television and broadcast history, and religious broadcasting. His awards include The Mensa Education and Research Foundation's Excellence in Research Award (1999, 2004, 2006); CSU’s Distinguished Faculty Research Award (1995) and the Outstanding Young Teacher Award (1986). Dr. Abelman was listed in the Top 100 Researchers in Field of Communication Studies, 1915-1995 (1999) as well as the Most Prolific Telecommunication Scholar Roster, 1985-1995 (1998). His books include: The Televiewing Audience: The Art & Science of Watching TV, Mass Communication: Issues & Perspective, Reclaiming the Wasteland: TV and Gifted Children, Television and the Exceptional Child and Religious Television: Controversies & Conclusions. He has published in many journals including: Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Critical Studies in Mass Communication, Roeper Review, Human Communication Research and Journal of Advertising Research.
