Urban Communication

Professional Experience & Community Activities

Known as an “Urban Pioneer,” Dr. Jeffres has researched cities as part of his interests. His interests include urban communication system and media effects in society.

Dr. Jeffres has just completed a report for Crain's Cleveland Business as well as a grant proposal for Life Banc. He is also working with students on the content analysis of “watchdog function” of the press.

Among all his accomplishments, Dr. Jeffres is the author of several books including: Urban Communication Systems: Neighborhoods and the Search for Community; and Mass Media Effects.

He has served in a variety of administrative roles in the School of Communication, including Chair of the Department of Communication, Graduate Director, and the Director of the Communication Research Center.

Education

Dr. Jeffres received his B.A. from the University of Idaho, an M.A. from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He came to Cleveland State University thirty years ago.


Outside of Cleveland State University, Dr. Jeffres likes to travel. He has previously visited Tibet, Manchu Pichu, in Peru, and the Galapagos Islands. Dr. Jeffres plans to visit Russia, Eastern Europe and Africa.
